This position works on the Marketing Team to communicate key health-related information to the public and NMDOH staff. This position assists with the development and tracking of social media ideas and trends to help increase and outline strategic goals. This position is responsible for the initiation and creation of talking points, presentations, articles, web pages, and other duties as assigned by the Director of Marketing.

The Social Media Coordinator exists to ensure the New Mexico Department of Health maintains a consistent, credible, and timely presence across digital and social media platforms where the public actively seeks information. This role bridges the gap between program expertise and public communication, translating complex health and policy content into accessible, engaging messages that drive awareness and help improve health outcomes.

How does it get done?

 
- Develop platform-specific content (copy, graphics, static and rich media video scripts) aligned with department goals, marketing campaign goals, and brand voice.
- Maintain a content calendar to ensure consistent posting across all NMDOH channels.
- Write an an appropriate reading level for target audiences.
Adapt long-form content into bite-sized, shareable social media posts
- Coordinate with NMDOH staff and contractors to design and gather visual assets
- Ensure all content meets ADA Section II and WCAG 2.2aa accessibility standards
- Schedule and publish posts using social media management tools (e.g., SproutSocial)
- Ensure all content is archived according to IPRA and state document retention policies
- Monitor comments, messages, and mentions across platforms
- Respond to public inquiries in a timely, accurate, and on-brand manner
- Flag sensitive or escalating conversations to NMDOH leadership
- Track key metrics across all channels, compiling into a weekly report that helps leadership understand the scope of behavior change across New Mexico.
Use data to recommend optimizations to visual design, content layout, and post performance.
- Serve as a liaison between the marketing team and NMDOH program and subject matter experts.

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate is a digitally savvy communicator with 2-3 years of experience who can balance creative content production with the depth and breadth of work performed at the New Mexico Department of Health. They bring hands-on social media knowledge, a strong writing instinct, a desire to learn about and promote public health topics, and the judgment to represent the NMDOH's voice accurately and responsibly across every post they publish.

Minimum Qualification

 

Associates Degree in Publications, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing, and/or related field and one (1) year of experience in public relations, mass communications, television, radio, print media, emergency communications, and/or emergency management. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Working Conditions

 
This position operates in a standard office environment, requiring occasional flexibility outside regular business hours to respond to emerging public health events or time-sensitive campaigns. This role is primarily sedentary and computer-based, with collaboration across departments and rare travel for community events or organizational meetings.
