SHIFT Healthcare Provider Educator

As the SHIFT (Safe, Healthy Infants & Families Thrive) Healthcare Provider Educator, you will be part of an exciting new multidisciplinary community collaborative working to facilitate engagement with expectant parents who have a substance use disorder (SUD). This includes working with healthcare agencies to increase knowledge and education about the intersection of prenatal care and SUD treatment.

We Require

  • One year of experience working within the healthcare community

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Health Education, Public Health, Early Child Development, or another closely related field

  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis

  • Experience working with funders to develop federal, state, or private grant proposals or preparing, negotiating, and monitoring contract documents

Job Contributions

  • Implement a CME-accredited program for medical professionals focused on the intersection of prenatal care and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. The program will emphasize Maricopa SHIFT's non-stigmatizing philosophy and collaborative approach, promoting compassionate and effective care

  • Educate healthcare professionals on best practices for managing Perinatal Substance Use Disorder, with a focus on dispelling common myths and presenting evidence-based information

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with over 50 service providers involved in SHIFT-related initiatives across Maricopa County

  • Design and implement strategies to help providers effectively engage eligible families who may be marginalized, avoid prenatal care, or reside in opioid "hotspots" within the County

  • Target populations include individuals experiencing homelessness, incarceration, or detention; juveniles; Native American communities; non-English speakers; and upper/middle-class parents with substance use disorders or other barriers to care

  • Represent the Maricopa County Department of Public Health by actively participating in community coalitions, conferences, and workgroups

  • Collaborate with the Communications team and other stakeholders to create and update written SHIFT materials for community distribution, ensuring content remains accurate and relevant. Manage and update website content to reflect current information and resources

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of health education programs in meeting grant objectives and impacting the target population's knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, practices, and behaviors using appropriate data collection methods

  • Use the results, along with community feedback, to inform future program planning and guide policy development

  • Engage extensively with underserved communities through frequent collaboration with academia, community-based organizations, and public or private agencies. Build and maintain active support for health education programs within these networks

  • Partner with Labor and Delivery NICUs in hospitals across Maricopa County to promote non-stigmatizing, evidence-based best practices for the care of substance-exposed newborns and their parents

  • Recruit and facilitate training for Peer Mentors—women who have experienced substance use disorder during pregnancy—on presentation skills

  • Collaborate with Maricopa SHIFT partner organizations to support the integration of Peer Mentors as volunteers or paid staff

  • Oversee the development of their training and presentation skills for both professional and community audiences during Maricopa SHIFT presentations.

Working Conditions

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions

  • Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, and requires walking/standing to a significant degree

  • Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

  • Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
