This position is in the Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau of the New Mexico Department of Health¿s Center for Health Protection (CHP). The Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau consist of the office of injury prevention (including sexual violence prevention), substance use epidemiology section, overdose prevention section, alcohol-related harms prevention program, survey epidemiology and survey units.

Why does the job exist?

 
This position coordinates overdose prevention efforts involving health system partners in order to reduce morbidity and mortality due to substance misuse, including post-overdose response, linkages to care, and facilitating access to peer support and navigation. The coordinator will develop, negotiate, and monitor contracts between NMDOH and stakeholders, including health systems, emergency departments, emergency medical services, and treatment providers, for peer support services.

How does it get done?

 
Develop and maintain outreach to health systems and hospitals which can serve as partners through contracts or by relationship building and provision of technical assistance. Build collaborative partnerships and contracts with health systems and community partners to strengthen capacity to provide peer support, overdose prevention education, and linkages to care. Support NM hospitals' naloxone dispensing/distribution capacity through sharing of implementation toolkit and support. Develop skills in contract development and administration for partnerships with hospitals, EDs, and other partners. Develop systems for monitoring deliverables, processing and reviewing invoices for contracted entities. Engage with colleagues in evaluation and prevention, and in the Substance Use Epidemiology Section (SUES) focused on data collection for linkages to care and ED/hospital interventions. Assist in evaluation and grant reporting for hospital/emergency department projects. Collaborate with other departments, agencies, and organizations on reducing overdose deaths and promoting overdose prevention strategies. Keep up to date on new evidence and best practices regarding opioids, Naloxone, MOUD, pain management practices, harm reduction, and overdose prevention strategies.

Ideal Candidate

 
Bachelor¿s Degree with 4 years of experience working with diverse partners across state agencies, health systems, and in communities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including meeting facilitation, and good understanding of program administration and project management. Flexible, able to work independently as part of a fast-paced team. Experience with federal grants, contract management, and familiarity with drug overdose prevention work in New Mexico or elsewhere preferred.

Minimum Qualification

 
Associate's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Education, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Family Studies/Services, Social Sciences, or Human Services and one (1) year of experience as a social work assistant and/or in social or community coordination, working with communities, working on health or social service-related matters, social work/case management experience, and/or behavioral health care. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
