The New Mexico Department of Health is a centralized state agency that ensures safety net services to all New Mexicans through the many programs and services.  The NMDOH, in order to ensure health equity, we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico.  Public Health Division helps meet the needs of New Mexico with their multi-disciplinary teams including Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Children's Medical Services (CMS), Health Promotion, Disease Intervention Team, and Health Services which includes Breast and Cervical Cancer screening, Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) prevention, screening and treatment, Medication for Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorder (MAUD/MOUD), Immunizations, Tuberculosis (TB) screening and treatment and emergency response.

Why does the job exist?

 
The NE Region Immunization nurse helps to maintain approachable communication and complete service to our VFC providers, regional employees, State Immunization Program Staff, Public Health Office personnel, Contractors, NMSIIS program team and the public, to support the Northeast region of New Mexico. This position works to provide consistency and clarity to our providers regarding the required and recommended practices in participation in the NM VFC program including Storage and Handling of Vaccine.

How does it get done?

 
Provide initial and ongoing training and support to all VFC provider sites regarding the Immunization program requirements and proper storage and handling. Complete site visits to assure appropriate storage and handling of VFC vaccines and that all requirements are being met by the provider site. Coordinate and facilitate routine and emergent vaccine transfers as needed. Complete enrollment and dis-enrollment site visits and actions. Work with the regional outreach team and nurse managers to organize flu and other vaccine outreach events. Provide support and response to any local outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases as well as during a national or global pandemic. Participate in the Vaccine Advisory Group to determine future school and daycare immunization schedule requirements. Assist with the Adult Vaccine program for support measures to include vaccine transport and recommendations based on approved vaccine schedules. Maintain clear and accurate documentation and record keeping for the VFC program in State and Federal record keeping systems. Complete Quality Improvement measures for predetermined sites to assist with improving immunization metrics.

Who are the customers?

 
This job work closely with the NM Vaccine Program to provide local support to NE Region Public Health offices and NE Region VFC providers. This position assists with ensuring vaccines are provided in a safe manner to children and adults in the NE Region.

Ideal Candidate

 
Experience working with community partners and healthcare providers. Involvement with inter-agency initiatives and special projects at the community level.  Experience with regulatory compliance, immunization protocols, providing written and verbal education in-person and virtually.

Minimum Qualification

 
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Working Conditions

 
There will be extensive use of a personal computer and a telephone while sitting and standing; there will be extensive periods of driving state cars with extended periods of sitting; there will be some periods of standing while assisting in clinics at health offices.
