Senior Public Health Dentist

MOS Code: 63H (Army), 47G1D (Air Force) 

Education and Experience: DDS or DMD degree from an accredited college or university, plus four (4) years experience in the practice of dentistry, including two (2) years experience in Pediatric Dentistry and two (2) years of administrative experience in a public health dental program.
 
Licenses and Certificates
  • Licensed to practice dentistry by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.
  • Certified to write prescriptions by federal and state regulatory authorities.
  • Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state.

Requirements

Under general direction, supervise professional dental services and clinical staff and provide highly specialized and technically intricate professional level dental functions of the public health dental program.

Qualifications

Provide preventive, restorative and surgical services. Involves: Provide prophylaxis, topical fluoride, oral hygiene instruction, nutritional counseling, sealant placement, Pediatric Behavioral Management Dentistry with local anesthetic, refer treatment requiring Nitrous Oxide to a pediatric specialist as N2O2 sedation with treatment is not an option, Molar root canal therapy, Surgical third molar extractions, Orthodontic uprighting of molars via spacers, Anterior acrylic crowns, Composite Veneers, In Office Fixed Space Maintainer fabrication with either Band and Loop or Distal Shoe and Total Canal Vitapex on Primary Dentition. Provide services at permanent clinic site and through the city in dental mobile units. Interpret radiographic survey of oral structures/tissues of clients.  Refer to appropriate specialist when deemed necessary.  Regularly inspect and evaluate equipment and personnel to assess and improve services provided by the public health dental program.  Assure that necessary consent and treatment documentation is complete and accurate.  Comply with OSHA guidelines, radiation safety guidelines and Hazardous Chemical guidelines as mandated by the health district and/or Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.  Maintain liaison with national, state and local dental societies, including area professional dental training programs to maintain active status in the dental society.

Perform related professional duties contributing to the realization of City and department goals as required. Involves: Substitute, as qualified, for coworkers or supervisor during temporary absences by carrying out specifically delegated functions to maintain continuity of normal services, if assigned. Provide designated support for special projects, audits, or activities overseen by higher-level staff or supervisor. Serve as a community mentor/instructor for area students, interns and dental school residents.

Supervise assigned personnel.  Involves: Schedule, assign, instruct, guide and check work. Appraise employee performance. Provide for training and development. Enforce personnel rules and regulations and work behavior standards firmly and impartially. Counsel, motivate and maintain harmony. Interview applicants. Recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, or other employee status changes.
