DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Senior Inventory Management Clerk – Team Lead is responsible for coordinating, leading, and executing the movement, setup, and management of materials, equipment, and program areas to support operational needs. This role provides day-to-day oversight and direction to inventory staff, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently, accurately, and in alignment with departmental priorities. The Team Lead ensures that resources are effectively distributed, facilities are properly prepared, and program areas are relocated or dismantled as required. This includes planning, assigning, and monitoring work related to warehouse operations, site setup, and logistics coordination to maintain smooth and timely operations.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Leadership & Supervision:
  • Lead, supervise, and provide directions to logistics and inventory staff to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely. 
  • Assign daily work activities, monitor performance, and provide ongoing coaching and training. 
  • Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-one check-ins to address performance, productivity, and development. 
  • Assist in onboarding and training new employees in procedures, safety protocols, and operational standards. 
Logistics & Operations Coordination:
  • Coordinate and execute the movement, setup, and takedown of facilities and program areas. 
  • Oversee the relocation of program areas, materials, and equipment to support operational priorities and special projects. 
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure timely delivery, setup, and breakdown of materials for programs and events. 
  • Ensure all logistical operations are performed in alignment with departmental policies and timelines. 
Inventory Management:
  • Oversee the organization, tracking, and maintenance of inventory including materials, supplies, and equipment. 
  • Conduct and supervise physical inventory counts to ensure accuracy, availability, and proper condition of assets. 
  • Monitor storage practices to prevent loss, damage, or misplacement of materials. 
  • Maintain inventory records and ensure updates are accurately reflected in tracking systems. 
Facility Setup & Equipment Management:
  • Assist with and oversee the building, assembling, and arrangement of furniture and equipment for program areas, temporary facilities, and events. 
  • Ensure all setups meet operational, safety, and programmatic requirements. 
Emergency & Disaster Response:
  • Provide leadership and hands-on support during natural disasters and emergency situations. 
  • Coordinate rapid deployment of supplies, equipment, and personnel to support emergency operations. 
  • Assist in establishing temporary facilities and ensuring they are fully operational. 
Compliance & Safety:
  • Enforce safety standards and proper handling procedures for equipment and materials. 
  • Ensure staff adhere to all operational and safety guidelines during movement and setup activities. 
Additional Duties:
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operational and logistical needs.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The position requires lifting of heavy items of up to 60 pounds and/or walking on rough surfaces routinely and/or regular physical exertion such as climbing of ladders. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or GED.
May require a valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
 
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two (2) years of inventory control, materials management, or record keeping experience are required. May require experience in operating a forklift and other motorized or non-motorized materials handling equipment.

Qualifications

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.** 

  • Strong leadership and team coordination skills.
  • Knowledge of inventory control processes and logistics operations.
  • Ability to operate basic tools and equipment for assembly and setup.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced and physically demanding environments.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • A valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. 
  • 3+ years of experience in inventory management, logistics, warehouse operations, or facilities support.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Experience in disaster response, emergency logistics, or large-scale facility operations is highly desirable.

SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED 
None. However, the department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.
 
SAFETY IMPACT POSITION   Yes 
If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

SALARY INFORMATION   SPECIAL FUND POSITION
Grants & Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
 
 Pay Grade 12
