Position Overview:
The Safety Coordinator carries out a wide range of functions in making sure that safety standards and procedures are met and adhered to at all time at Harris County Public Health (HCPH). This position supports the agency's safety initiatives by partnering with the Safety Manager and staff to identify and address unsafe workplace activities and operations. This role assists in developing safety policies, procedures, and training programs, while researching regulatory requirements and recommending best practices to enhance the overall safety culture.

 Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Partners with HCPH Safety Manager and staff to address unsafe activities or operations in the workplace.

  • Assists in the development of safety training programs.
  • Assists in the development of HCPH safety policies and procedures.
  • Researches regulatory requirements, and recommends best safety practices to the Safety Manager.
  • Coordinates the process of accident investigation and analysis.
  • Responsible for keeping records of safety-related incidents, and recommends corrective measures to the Safety Manager.
  • Organizes and conducts safety training for leadership and staff on a frequent basis.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, or other related field.

Experience:

  • Five (5) years relevant work experience in a similar role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.
  • Ability to work well with staff members, and other Harris County Departments.
  • Must use your personal mobile device for our Multifactor Authentication process.

  • Safety certification 

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work: 

  • This is a fulltime position

  • Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, from 8am to 5 pm.

  • Others days and hours as necessary.


Work Environment: 

  • This job operates in a professional office environment, together with travel to department sites. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.


Physical Demands: 

  • This is an active role and could require the ability to lift up to 30 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
