RN Advanced Practice (APRN)



The mission of the Louisiana Department of Health is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana.



The Public Health RN Advanced Practice position is assigned to the Office of Public Health and is domiciled in Region 9 but is also assigned to work in other public health units as needed to provide services. The APRN is responsible for advanced primary and preventative healthcare, such as Reproductive Health Title X Family Planning, Maternity, and STD/HIV, for individuals and families. The APRN practices within the scope of practice as designated by the Louisiana Advanced Nurse Practice Act (LRS 37:911-913), the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, and adheres to federal, state, and LDH/OPH program guidelines.

This position requires routine travel that extends beyond the employee's domicile parish. These responsibilities are an inherent and ongoing part of the job. This position is directly supervised by the Regional Medical Officer (RMO).

Requirements

Possession of a current Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or a temporary permit.

NOTE:
The temporary APRN permit allows an APRN applicant to work in a limited capacity for up to 120 days while awaiting review for full APRN licensure by the nursing board. An APRN applicant cannot medically diagnose or medically manage patients until they are licensed and have prescriptive authority. If the APRN license is not received within the 120-day period and the permit expires, the employee must be removed from the position.

  • Provides advanced primary or preventive healthcare for individuals and families at the advanced or expert clinician level. Assess the health of individuals and identifies patient needs/problems; obtains a comprehensive health history, performs physical examinations such as pap smears, breast and/or pelvic exams and other exams as needed for, but not limited to, Title X Reproductive Health/Family Planning, Maternity and/or STD patients; performs, orders, and/or reviews laboratory tests, conducts appropriate procedures for the purposes of diagnosis and treatment. Develops medical treatment plans to meet patient needs including prescribing medication, counseling, and/or making referrals, in collaboration with the physician.
  • Provides advanced professional expertise and technical assistance to nurses and ancillary staff in the parish health units to implement quality healthcare strategies; functions within a multi-disciplinary team; may mentor nursing students in clinical internships.
  • Responds to public health emergencies and provides professional nursing emergency care within the scope of nursing practice. Collaborates with the Regional Medical Officer and Regional Leadership in planning and implementing emergency preparedness/disaster response in the region and statewide as directed. 
  • Attends and completes all LDH/OPH trainings, workshops and staff meetings as required. Ensure license remains in good standing. Accepts and performs additional duties as assigned.
