Public Health Division, Southwest Region is comprised of eight counties and works to promote health and wellness, improve health outcomes, and assure safety net services for all people in New Mexico.

Why does the job exist?

 
The purpose of the Tuberculosis (TB) Nurse Coordinator position is to provide TB case management for the diagnosis, education, referral, and Direct Observed Therapy (DOT) for clients diagnosed with active TB in the Southwest (SW) Region. Provide technical guidance and training to local public health office nurses to ensure adequate care, treatment and follow up for clients with TB in the SW Region and other counties outside of Dona Ana County to prevent and control the spread of Tuberculosis.

How does it get done?

 
This position will be responsible for:

Perform initial interviews of active TB cases in the SW Region and establish case management/develop treatment plan by setting up contact interviews, collecting lab and sputum specimens per TB program protocols.

Provide surveillance and maintain standardized database (client registry) for active TB and TBI cases for SW Region by entering data in the Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NMEDSS).

Audit TB client medical records.

Provide annual surveillance visits to hospitals and all other agencies that house active TB cases to ensure reporting requirements are met per Federal guidelines.

Provide TB consultation, training, and technical guidance to SW Region health care providers, including infection control practitioners, community-based organizations, correctional facilities, local health office nurse managers and general public as needed.

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate has experience:

Providing medication adherence and experience at locating contacts for second round testing in active TV in children; active TB in clients with chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Hepatitis, HIV; drug susceptibility and adverse drug interactions.

Strong preference will be given to bilingual applicants fluent in both English and Spanish.

Minimum Qualification

 
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. 

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.  

Successful completion of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act), and successful completion of CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act) trainings are required within sixty (60) days of employment.

Position will require Blood-borne pathogen training and successful completion of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) course within thirty (30) days as condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
Services are provided in a clinic, auxiliary and community sites, and occasionally in the client's home with potential exposure to communicable diseases with computer usage for a variety of clinic and office functions. Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of office noise, bending, standing and lifting.  Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.  Services are provided in a clinic with diverse racial and ethnic populations, many who do not speak the English language.  May be required to work evening and/or weekend hours at various Public Health Offices.
