GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  

This position serves as the Public Health Division’s central resource for public health communication, editorial review, and guidance on professional writing.   The Public Health Communications Coordinator (PHCC) will support subject-matter experts within the Division on their public-facing content, with a primary focus on ensuring that materials are clearly written, audience-appropriate, and aligned with public health communication strategies. The position will also be responsible for writing and updating public health emergency response plans.  A successful candidate will have strong editorial, technical writing, and editing skills; knowledge of public health communication strategies; demonstrated experience translating complex information for a variety of audiences; and the ability to build communication capacity within the Division.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.


  • Ensure that health communication from the Public Health Division (PHD) is cohesive, consistent, accurate, effective, high-quality, and aligned with the Division's mission.
  • Provide guidance, support, and technical assistance to PHD staff on synthesizing complex program and public health information into clear, accurate, and audience-appropriate content. 
  • Develop and conduct training related to public health communication.
  • Proofread and review all public-facing content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, readability, style, and alignment with public health communication strategies, suggesting revisions to improve clarity and accuracy.
  • Work closely with the Senior Administrator to apply PHD standards for quality work.  
  • In coordination with others, write and update Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Plans.
  • Lead the PHD communications workgroup, including coordinating and facilitating meetings. 
  • Identify training opportunities to align with the training needs of the PHD workforce. 
  • Act as the PHD resource on current processes related to Administrative Rule promulgation.
     

Requirements


PREFERENCES: 

Preference given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, health promotion/communication, English, or a related field. 

Preference given to candidates with 1-3 years of experience in public health, communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field.


KNOWLEDGE:


  • Skilled in public communications and technical writing. 
  • Knowledge of presentation development and media campaigns.
  • Intermediate to expert computer knowledge, including Google Suite and other technical software
  • Ability to train and provide technical assistance to others. 
  • Experience communicating with the public.
  • Knowledge of public health communication strategies.
  • Knowledge of communication principles, media, and public relations techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of people.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and gather, manage, and impart information to internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to write executive-level communications for internal and external audiences.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Business)
 
Experience:
0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Business) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Policy & Planning Analyst I
 
OR
 
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Business) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Policy & Planning Analyst I
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
None

  • The employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc.
