This position is located at the Division of Laboratory Services in Nashville, TN.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Sciences or related field of study from an accredited college or university with two years of full-time pertinent laboratory experience in a related field of study, and at least one year of supervisory and/or managerial experience; OR successful completion of an accredited, four year medical laboratory scientist program, and two years of full-time pertinent laboratory experience in the related field, and at least one year of supervisory and/or managerial experience; OR meet CLIA Testing Personnel Qualification Category set forth in federal CMS regulations 42 CFR 493.1489 and two years of full-time pertinent laboratory experience in the related field, and at least one year of supervisory and/or managerial experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: It is preferred that a PH Laboratory Consultant 2 performing clinical responsibilities have or be eligible for a TN Medical Laboratory Supervisor License or TN Medical Laboratory Director License. Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license throughout the duration of employment.

Substitution of Education for Experience: Undergraduate or graduate course work received from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for the required education and experience on a year-to-year basis to a maximum of two years (e.g., 24 graduate semester hours or 36 graduate quarter hours in a related field may substitute for education and/or one year of the required experience), with there being no substitution for the supervisory and/or managerial experience. A transcript with all credits is required to be uploaded with an employment application in order for the agency to properly evaluate a candidate's eligibility for a position in this classification. Additionally, up to two years of post-baccalaureate training (e.g., fellowships) in clinical and/or public health laboratory sciences may substitute for up to two years of the required experience.

Overview

The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) Division of Laboratory Services (DLS) provides clinical and environmental testing services through two public health laboratories located in Nashville and Knoxville. This position is based at the Nashville Central Laboratory, a dedicated facility with over 180 full-time employees, and is located within the Laboratory Support Services unit.

The Centralized Accessioning Supervisor supports pre-analytical services by managing accessioning staff, ensuring adherence to established procedures and regulatory requirements, monitoring operational performance, and promoting continuous quality improvement. The position also serves as a primary point of contact between accessioning, DLS testing sections, couriers, clients, and external partners to support communication and resolution of specimen intake issues.

Responsibilities

1. Supervise the day-to-day operations of the centralized accessioning unit, including courier coordination, specimen receipt, handling, inspection, and internal routing, to ensure timely and consistent processing while maintaining specimen integrity.
2. Supervise unit staff, and assign work, supervise training, evaluate performance, coordinate schedules, and ensure adequate staffing levels.
3. Ensure accurate entry of specimen information into the laboratory information management system (LIMS), oversee specimen inspection, chain-of-custody documentation, and acceptability determinations, and coordinate with the Informatics section and management to resolve system issues and support ongoing improvements.
4. Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., CLIA, EPA) and accreditation standards (e.g., CAP, ISO 17025, A2LA) by maintaining current procedures, reinforcing staff understanding and application, and participating in inspection and audit activities
5. Support the Lab Support Services Manager 3 in serving as a primary contact for specimen intake issues and administrative functions, including budgeting, contract management, and grant-related activities.
6. An employee in this class provides routine laboratory consultant work of considerable difficulty and of a larger scope.
7. This class differs from the PH Laboratory Consultant 1 in that an incumbent of the latter performs work of routine difficulty and smaller scope and complexity.
8. This class differs from a PH Laboratory Consultant 3 in that the latter acts as a consulting coordinator for several service units within a laboratory division or statewide.
