Using data and proven practice, the bureau’s programs support the delivery of direct services, linkages and referrals, population-based supports, program evaluation, education, monitoring and quality oversight, and policy and systems development.

What You'll Do:

The Ohio Department of Health is seeking a Public Health Consultant to support efforts to prevent child and infant deaths across Ohio. Join the Bureau of Maternal, Child, and Family Health to work with local review boards and community partners, provide training and technical assistance, and help turn program data into meaningful prevention strategies. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Serves as a program consultant for Ohio's Child Fatality Review, Fetal Infant Mortality Review and Sudden Infant Death programs, supporting efforts to identify health risks and strengthen prevention strategies. 
  • Provide technical assistance to local review boards, health departments, and community partners on fatality review processes, data collection, reporting, and program activities. 
  • Develop and deliver training, educational materials, tools and guidance to support local review boards and promote injury prevention and infant safe sleep.
  • Collaborate with state agencies, health care professionals, and community organizations to coordinate public health initiatives and reinforce prevention efforts.
  • Collect, analyze, and share program data to identify causes of death, trends, and risk factors; prepare annual reports and other materials to support program decisions.
  • Assist with developing program policies, objectives, and evaluation strategies to measure outcomes and improve public health practices. 
  • Support grant and contract activities, including reviewing funding applications, monitoring spending, and reviewing contract invoices.
  • Research public health issues, prepare reports and informational materials, and respond to inquiries from professionals, program participants and the public.

Qualifications

Position Qualifications:

Option 1:

  • 6 mos. exp. in providing direct service &/or consultation in a public health, community health, hospital &/or clinic setting (e.g., program evaluations, working with grants, developing & presenting training programs & in facilitating, working collaboratively with coalitions or groups)

  • Completion of graduate core coursework in public health, health care, health administration or related field 

  • Must be able to provide own transportation. 

OR 

Option 2:

  • 18 mos. exp. in providing direct service &/or consultation in a public health, community health, hospital &/or clinic setting (e.g., program evaluations, working with grants, developing & presenting training programs & in facilitating, working collaboratively with coalitions or groups) 

  • Completion of undergraduate core coursework in public health, health care, health administration or related field 

  • Must be able to provide own transportation. 

OR 

Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above. 

Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Graduate or advanced degree in public health, healthcare, health administration, or related field

  • Experience with fatality review processes (e.g., child fatality review, fetal infant mortality review)

  • Experience providing consultation or technical assistance regarding fatality review programs

  • Experience analyzing and interpreting mortality data

  • Experience working with computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office software)

  • Experience preparing and delivering speeches, presentations, or trainings before specialized audiences and the general public

  • Experience evaluating program and outcome data

  • Experience monitoring program compliance

  • Experience organizing and leading meetings

  • Experience developing and monitoring contracts and/or grants

Educational Transcript Requirements:

ALL ANSWERS TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS MUST BE SUPPORTED BY THE WORK EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION PROVIDED ON YOUR CIVIL SERVICE APPLICATION.
Unless required by legislation, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 12, Step 1 of the SEIU/1199 union Pay Range Schedule ($32.69 per hour), with an opportunity for pay increase after six months ($34.35 per hour) of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.
