Specific Responsibilities:

This is an OPS position working for a large caseload of Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) in Delray Beach.

• Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers via face to face, over the telephone via agency “warm line” (after- hours dedicated telephone line), group and/or individual education. Provide information regarding benefits, how to overcome common barriers, prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.  Reminds clients of their scheduled WIC appointments. Complies with the mandatory requirements in Section 215.422 F.S. and Chapter 3A-24 Florida Administrative Code regarding prompt payment process of special formula.
• Provides services to new mothers who are experiencing breastfeeding issues.
• Recognizes when breastfeeding issues/problems are above their level of training and provide appropriate referrals. 
• Provides materials/information to individuals and/or families about WIC services, and the WIC Breastfeeding Program. 
• Reminds clients of their scheduled WIC appointments.
• Maintain records, update client files and provide follow-up service on all referrals received with proper documentation.
• Demonstrates and distribute electric and manual breast pumps for WIC clients.  Receives and responds to referrals and/or caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine, periodic contacts with all mothers assigned.  Records data in the WIC FL WISE System on each client who receives counseling services.
• Refers clients for other community programs and services as needed (i.e., smoking cessation; abuse hotline and parenting education, etc.).
• Participate in outreach activities such as health fairs, baby fairs, etc. 
• Assists WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding and peer counseling through special projects.
• Participate in mandatory training; in-service training and other staff development activities. 
• Attends conferences, seminars, and workshops as assigned. 
• Participates in agency and program teams. Attends Peer Counselor meetings, staff meetings and special community events as assigned.
• Completes forms and paperwork in hard copy and electronically as required and submit reports to the Breastfeeding Coordinator/Supervisor.  
• Records activities on the Loving Support Weekly Activity Report.
• Prepares required documents reflecting expenditure of work time and tasks performed (i.e., EARs and timesheets) and submits to supervisor according to established deadlines.
• Travel throughout Palm Beach County is required.
• Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:

• Knowledge of breastfeeding science and practice
• Skill in basic counseling techniques
• Ability to learn and use Microsoft Windows based computer software programs inducing PowerPoint, internet, email and equipment or specific program software such as FL WSE and HMS.
• Ability to Verbalize Basic Breastfeeding information to WIC Peers.
• Ability to develop, plan and present technical and targeted breastfeeding education for individuals and groups
  
• Ability to organize and present information, verbally and in writing, in a concise, comprehensive and legible manner
• Ability to provide high level customer service lo internal or external customers
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and professional interactions with co-workers, supervisors, and others.

Qualifications:

• This position requires current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.  The Department of Health is unable to provide employment visa sponsorship. 
• Travel throughout Palm Beach County is required.

      Preferred Qualifications:

• High School Diploma
• Educated in the federally mandated second nutrition education for low-risk WIC participants on basic nutrition and breastfeeding support.
