Nurse Supervisor

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of Civil Commitment Unit for Sex Offenders (CCUSO) is seeking a Nurse Supervisor to join our team! This is a full-time position with a daytime schedule and on-call responsibilities.

Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON) or licensure as a RN in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

The Nurse Supervisor provides clinical and operational leadership for nursing services within a secure inpatient civil commitment environment. This position is responsible for supervising nursing staff, ensuring high-quality patient care, maintaining compliance with applicable policies and regulations, and promoting a safe, professional, and therapeutic treatment environment.  The Nurse Supervisor collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams including medical providers, behavioral health professionals, administration, and security personnel to support patient care, operational efficiency, and staff accountability.

This role requires strong leadership, sound clinical judgement, effective communication skills, and the ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced and highly structured environment.

Preferred qualifications include previous supervisory or charge nurse experience; at least five (5) years of secure inpatient treatment experience; strong leadership, conflict resolution, and communication skills; ability to work independently and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations; and knowledge of nursing regulations, documentation standards, and safe patient practices.

CCUSO provides a secure, long-term, and highly structured setting to treat sexual offenders who have served their prison terms, but, in a separate civil trial, have been found likely to reoffend. The facility provides state-of-the-art treatment to patients to lower their risk of re-offending and to release them from confinement as quickly as possible. There is a full range of diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitative services focused on addressing the conditions impacting a patient’s likelihood of re-offending. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and b. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing; and c. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability. 

2) All of the following (a and b): a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and b. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in nursing. 

3) All of the following (a, b, and c): a. Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and b. One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability; and c. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part b), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in nursing equals one year of full-time experience.
