GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  

The Infectious Disease Epidemiologist serves as a subject matter expert leading surveillance, field investigations, and outbreak responses for high-consequence public health threats across Wyoming. This role directs disease response strategies for Waterborne and Bioterrorism (BT), including Anthrax, Plague, Tularemia, Legionella, and Chronic Wasting Disease/CJD. Key responsibilities include conducting rapid case investigations, analyzing surveillance data, coordinating directly with the Wyoming Public Health Laboratory for clinical and water sample testing, and reporting crucial epidemiological data to the CDC.

In addition to direct outbreak leadership, this position drives program cross-cutting initiatives and manages 24/7 public health surge capacity. The epidemiologist will lead the development of the annual infectious disease report, maintain state web resources, author Health Alert Network (HAN) advisories, and cross-train personnel. The candidate will also participate in the All-Hazards Response 24/7 hotline rotation, serving as a vital point of contact for healthcare providers, first responders, and the public during emergency and non-emergency public health events.

  • Performs public health surveillance activities.
  • Analyzes data from epidemiologic investigation or study.
  • Evaluates results and assists in formulation of conclusions.
  • Prepares detailed reports based upon investigation, surveillance, and analysis.
  • Coordinates public health interventions and control measures.
  • Uses laboratory resources to support epidemiologic activities and interpret laboratory results for use in epidemiologic investigation.
  • Skilled in the use of information systems for surveillance, investigation, and other epidemiologic practices.
  • Develops policies and procedures.
  • Serves as environmental health advisor.
  • Gathers epidemiologic data on cases from physicians, laboratories, and patients.
  • Monitors epidemiologic trends for detection of clusters and outbreaks.
  • Provides subject matter expertise in zoonotic/vectorborne and waterborne diseases.

Requirements


PREFERENCES: 


Preference may be given to candidates with a Master's degree in public health and experience in infectious disease surveillance and case investigation.


KNOWLEDGE: 


  • Knowledge of public and business administration.
  • Knowledge of the principles of organization.
  • Knowledge of epidemiologic principles for surveillance of infectious diseases.
  • Knowledge of case-control studies.
  • Knowledge of basic biologic principles.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Epidemiology)
 
Experience:
1-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Epidemiology) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Epidemiologist I
 
OR
 
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Epidemiology) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Epidemiologist I
