Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position serves as the Breastfeeding Coordinator and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) at DOH-Lake. This position also serves as a Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE). This position has the lead responsibility for breastfeeding promotion, support and training for the WIC Program at DOH-Lake. This position requires independent judgement based on the WIC DHM 150-24 Policy and Procedure Manual. This position will provide consultation, direction, and oversight to DOH-Lake WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. This position will also provide breastfeeding promotion, support, and counseling to WIC mothers. It is a non-supervisory position.

Provides breastfeeding promotion, support, and counseling to WIC mothers. Counsels women individually, in groups, or by telephone to establish breastfeeding, overcome common barriers, and prevent common breastfeeding problems. Provides the required 2^nd high risk nutrition education contact to all clients identified as high risk for Breastfeeding Complications, provided that is the only high risk identified for that client. Responsible for calling all clients scheduled for 8130V0 appointments within the appointment time and documenting appropriately in FL-WiSE for all clients receiving contacts. Documentation in FL-WiSE is completed by the end of the clinic day.

Serves as a consultant to professional staff regarding breastfeeding. Manages the breast pump loan program and breast pump inventory. Inventory is sent to the Administrative Assistant I upon completion. Trains and consults with professional staff regarding teaching clients on how to use breast pumps. Monitors the Breastfeeding Referral System daily and responds to all client requests for pumps.

Arranges for training of Peer Counselors. Mentors new Breastfeeding Peer Counselors during their first 6 months of employment, providing routine follow-up, observation, and guidance. Conducts monthly meetings with Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. Monitors the Breastfeeding Peer Counselors monthly via direct observation, sending copies to the Public Health Nutrition Program Director. Participates in the monthly Breastfeeding Coordinator conference call and the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator conference call.

Provides breastfeeding promotion, support, and training to WIC staff. Monitors local agency breastfeeding rates and shares statistics with WIC staff. Encourages and motivates WIC staff to promote breastfeeding to WIC participants. Develops and writes annual breastfeeding program goals and objectives for the DOH-Lake WIC Nutrition Program Plan, as well as completing a Breastfeeding Needs Assessment for the Nutrition Program Plan. Writes an update on the previous year’s goals and objectives.

Plans, conducts, and evaluates in-service education and staff development sessions on breastfeeding for WIC and Florida Department of Health in Lake County staff. Also provides annual two-hour breastfeeding training to WIC staff to meet WIC requirements. Keeps staff abreast of new information in the WIC program regarding breastfeeding.

Writes lesson plans for breastfeeding support groups and breastfeeding classes for breastfeeding mothers and prenatal clients. Conducts breastfeeding classes for prenatal clients and facilitates breastfeeding support groups for WIC and breastfeeding women in the community. Works with the Senior Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to ensure classes follow specified lesson plans and that there is a method of evaluation for each class or group. Promotes breastfeeding and WIC to community groups by maintaining cooperative relationships and by participating in meetings and health fairs.

• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
• Ability to use a computer, printer, scanner, fax machine, and calculator.
• Ability to type proficiently.
• Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, and procedures.

Qualifications:

Minimum – 

• Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. This may include working in a special needs or Red Cross shelter, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
• This is an in-office position only. Willing to physically come in the office to perform the duties & responsibilities of the position.
• Possess an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant credential, Advanced Lactation Consultant credential, or an Advanced Nurse Lactation Consultant credential.
• Willing to travel to different WIC sites in Lake County.
• Have at least 2 years’ experience assisting breastfeeding mothers and infants.

Preferred –

• Experience presenting to and providing breastfeeding education to groups.
• Experience training and/or mentoring co-workers
