Epidemiologist

CDPH is currently hiring an Epidemiologist (Research Scientist Staff) within our Center for Infectious Diseases' (CID) Division of Communicable Disease Control (DCDC). In this role, you will design, implement, and report on applied research studies and analyses from a variety of data sources to address relevant tuberculosis (TB) control issues, and lead California TB-related evaluation work. This includes, but is not limited to, serving as the state’s evaluation focal point to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) national TB evaluation workgroup; developing and reporting on CDC-required evaluation plans; and serving as a subject matter expert for the California TB Control Branch (TBCB) on national and state TB performance measures, with a deep understanding of how the performance measures are calculated and interpreted.

Key Responsibilities:

• Designs, coordinates and conducts applied research studies to address relevant TB control problems, and analyzes large, complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and relationships

• Performs advanced epidemiologic analyses of TB data and related data sources to determine TB risk factors, outcomes, prevention, and health inequities

• Extracts and analyzes data from multiple data sources; interprets and presents results from research findings; and prepares reports, scientific publications, and other communications

• Develops and recommends TB control standards and practices based on research outcomes

• Leads statewide work for national TB evaluation efforts through the CDC TB Program Evaluation Network, serving as designated “evaluation focal point"

• Provides technical expertise and leadership in developing and refining national and statewide TB indicators and objectives

• Independently oversees development and maintenance of code libraries used to calculate national and statewide TB control performance measures and documents methods used

• Applies epidemiological expertise in survey design and analysis

• Leads ongoing development and reporting for CDC-required TB evaluation plan for California, and prepares and submits internal and external (e.g., CDC) reports for the Section

• Supports evaluation components of data reviews and grant applications

• Acts as lead Epidemiologist for program evaluation and improvement, providing technical guidance to epidemiologist liaisons who support program evaluation and improvement projects with local TB control programs in California

• Contributes to annual statewide strategic priorities for local evaluation partnerships

• Presents data to local TB programs and provides technical assistance in interpreting performance data and evaluating interventions, and contributes to the formulation and prioritization of interventions based on the data

• Provides epidemiologic assistance as needed to TB programs across California, adapting support to varying morbidity levels

Telework Policy and Residency Requirement:

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two (2) years of professional scientific research experience in epidemiology/biostatistics or closely related specialty, which shall include at least one (1) year of experience equivalent to that of a Research Scientist, Range B and possession of a master’s or doctoral degree in the required scientific specialty or in a closely related specialty.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis. Fluency in R or SAS

• Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing

• Skills in project management

• Skills in data visualization using standard tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, RShiny, etc.

• Experience using SQL

• Experience with public health program evaluation using standardized performance metrics

• Experience working in a state or local health department

• Knowledge and experience with tuberculosis

• Experience with public health surveillance data
