Epidemiologist 2 (Behavioral Health/Opioid Overdose Reduction Program)

Responsible for professional scientific and assessments data of considerable difficulty. Manages data and conducts evaluations and studies Opioid Use, misuse and its impact on the general population health, public health surveillance, community health assessment and planning, and program evaluation and planning. Performs health and risk assessments and provides expertise to department physicians, medical professionals, environmental regulatory personnel, and other department officials.

Requirements

  • Compiles scientific health studies on the impact of Opioids in Davidson County.
  • To maintain accurate, comprehensive, and current data on epidemiologic and demographic indicators – collected, analyzed, and interpreted.
  • Be knowledgeable of the drug overdose data system requirements and make improvements to the data collection system where needed.
  • Manage the program’s central data system which includes importing data from community partners, creating, and running routine reports, and interfacing with the program’s central data server.
  • Manage, monitor, and provide oversight of data collection from community partners.
  • Develop and provide routine and ad hoc reports for the program on data and other information collected.
  • Coordinate data activities with primary partners (EMS responders, Fire, Police, Medical Examiner, MPHD, and State staff).
  • Identify other entities that have relevant data and develop/maintain those relationships.
  • Maintain electronic file of current opioid epidemic publications and reports.
  • Design and conduct other data collection and analysis activities and create reports that support program operations and planning.
  • Design and implement special studies and evaluations to review key aspects of the program (drug overdose patterns, special population studies, etc. and complete special reports.
  • Provide training, technical assistance and resources/tools to collaborating staff, a variety of providers and other grant stakeholders on the collection, use and reporting of data.
  • Support the program’s planning process and grant administration by supplying data and reports to relevant parties.
  • Conducts surveillance activities for identifies health events.
  •  Develops and maintains a system for the collection, analysis, interpretation, and distribution of health data.
  • Engages in community health assessment and planning.
  • Collects, analyzes, and disseminates community data on health problems, health risk factors, access to care, health care utilization, and health outcomes.
  • Assists in prioritizing health problems and selection of interventions.
  • Assists in preparing assessment of need, methodology, and evaluation for grant proposals.
  • Conducts evaluation of program effectiveness and efficiency including health outcomes, access to care, and health care utilization.
  • Provides direction for epidemiological investigations.
  • Works with management to identify the educational needs within the department and in the community.
  • Participates in the development of educational or training programs or classes.
  • Participates in teaching or instructing others, as required.
  • Communicates with local, state, and national agencies, groups, and individuals.
  • Communicates epidemiologic findings of diseases and health events to stakeholders.
  • Produces scientific community health assessment reports and epidemiological publications.

Qualifications

Doctorate degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics, health informatics, or a social or environmental science and 2 years? of experience in conducting epidemiological studies, surveillance, or community assessment and planning;
OR
Master?s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics, health informatics, and 3 years? of experience in conducting epidemiological studies, surveillance, or community assessment and planning.

  • Ability to utilize statistical software packages and other computer systems will vary by position and can include, but is not limited to, intermediate to advanced SAS, STATA, EpiInfo, SPSS, MS Access, MS Excel, SQL Server, and MapInfo / ArcGIS.

  • Skill in interpersonal communications, both verbal and in writing.
  • Ability to convey statistical principles and practices to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to translate complex data and epidemiological concepts into easily understood information for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
