The County of San Diego's Health and Human Services Agency is currently accepting applications from qualified applicants for the position of

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER

Department of Public Health Services

Interviews will be held on the week of July 27, 2026.
Job offers will be made on the week of August 3, 2026.


The starting salary for this position will be based on the candidate’s qualifications at time of

appointment.


Future Salary Increases:

** June 2026 – 5.47% increase to base pay (3.50% Across-the-Board + 1.97% Market Adjustment) 

** June 2027 – 4.97% increase to base pay (3.00% Across-the- Board + 1.97% Market Adjustment)


 
Community Health Workers (CHW) are frontline public health workers who will engage with and connect individuals, families, care and community organizations to better understand the services needed. Community Health Workers build individual and community capacity by increasing individuals' knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, social support and advocacy.  This list may also be used to fill future vacancies in other Departments within Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).

Community Health Workers (CHWs) are frontline public health workers who are trusted members of the community they serve. CHWs serve as liaisons between health and social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. Incumbents may be assigned to varied programs and work locations within the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), and reporting to the Department of Public Health Services. NOTE: Incumbents may occasionally be required to work during irregular business hours such as evenings.

Hiring Process and Timeline

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins after week of August 3, 2026..  Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening. 
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results. 
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifying education/experience:  
  1. High school degree or GED AND
  2. At least one (1) year of full-time experience or one (1) year of full-time equivalent volunteer experience providing social services and/or health education and outreach to the community.

Condition of Employment


As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

Evaluation

The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) monthemployment list based upon scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental application questionnaire. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate, as the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.
