What you will be doing:
If you are looking to build a strong foundation in state accounting while making an immediate impact, this Accounting Technician 1 position offers an exciting opportunity to support essential financial operations within the Department of Health. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience processing accounts payable and travel transactions, reconciling financial documents, working in statewide accounting systems, and helping ensure vendors and employees are paid accurately and on time. You will work as part of a collaborative and supportive team where you can develop your knowledge of state fiscal procedures, travel regulations, and accounting practices while receiving guidance from experienced accounting staff. This position offers a fast-paced and engaging environment where your attention to detail, customer service, and problem-solving skills will directly contribute to maintaining critical services during an important departmental transition. We are centrally located in beautiful downtown Juneau, close to shopping, dining, hiking trails, and the waterfront. This position is located on the 1st floor of the Alaska Office Building.

Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies in addition to the minimum qualifications listed below:

  • Clerical – Knowledge of filing, typing, entering data, maintaining records, taking shorthand, and using and completing forms.
  • Problem Solving – Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations
  • Self-Management - Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.

Requirements

One year of clerical work experience maintaining records that included using computer systems and performing basic arithmetic calculations. 
 
Substitutions:
Successful completion of a formal vocational education program in accounting or bookkeeping will substitute for the required experience.
 
Post-secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month).

  • Three (3) professional references, whom we may contact by phone, are required. One (1) of these references must be your current or most recent supervisor, if not already provided in the application. 
  • Current performance evaluation, if available.
  • A copy of academic transcripts (unofficial is okay; please ensure that the institution name/URL is listed on the transcripts) is used to verify that you meet the minimum qualifications.

EDUCATION
