Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a masters degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics or health informatics.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a masters degree in a health science, biomedical science or environmental science field with two years work experience in epidemiology.

Overview

The Viral Hepatitis (VH) Program within the Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP) division of the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is currently hiring for an Epidemiologist 1 in Nashville, TN, https://www.tn.gov/health/cedep.html. This is a state position that currently requires 5 in-office days per month. Staff in the Viral Hepatitis Program work to increase access to diagnosis and treatment to reduce viral hepatitis infection, morbidity, and mortality rates in Tennessee. This includes addressing health disparities related to viral hepatitis. TDH activities in support of this effort include: 1) conducting disease surveillance and outbreak planning, early detection, and rapid response; 2) improving access to prevention, testing, and treatment; and 3) building partnerships and establishing policies to address the viral hepatitis epidemic in Tennessee.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee statewide viral hepatitis surveillance, including disease reporting, investigation, and notification.
  • Performing surveillance activities, quality assurance, and quality improvement on hepatitis B data within the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) Base System (NBS).
  • Conducting data analysis as needed for grant-related meetings,
  • training/technical assistance requests, and grant deliverables.
  • Developing data visualizations for internal and external partners.
  • Participating in grant-related conference calls, meetings, and site visits.
  • Assisting with viral hepatitis surveillance data entry and/or medical record requests, as needed.
  • Participating in grant development, writing, administration, and monitoring to ensure compliance with grant requirements.
  • Participating in the development of the annual Viral Hepatitis Epidemiological Profile.
  • Assisting with the end-of-the-year data validation and closeout as requested.
  • Working in collaboration with viral hepatitis field staff, or other programs within the Tennessee Department of Health, and federal partners.
  • Developing detailed procedural guides for all assigned tasks.
  • Serving in surge capacity to assist in cluster or outbreak investigations.
