Position Overview

The Perinatal Hepatitis C Surveillance and Data Analysis Intern will support the Georgia Department of Public Health’s efforts to monitor and improve outcomes for infants exposed to hepatitis C. The intern will assist with the analysis of surveillance data related to perinatal hepatitis C exposure and follow-up testing, helping identify trends, gaps in care, and opportunities for program improvement.

This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public health surveillance, epidemiologic analysis, and maternal-child health initiatives.

Responsibilities

The intern will work under the guidance of program staff and epidemiologists to:

  • Conduct an in-depth analysis of perinatal hepatitis C cases using state surveillance data.
  • Evaluate the completeness and accuracy of maternal and infant testing records.
  • Examine demographic, geographic, and clinical factors associated with perinatal HCV exposure and missed follow-up testing.
  • Assess trends over time to identify potential increases in perinatal hepatitis C transmission.
  • Identify gaps in data collection, reporting, or follow-up that may impact program effectiveness.
  • Assist in developing a summary report or presentation of findings.
  • Provide recommendations to support data quality improvement and potential enhancements to the Perinatal Hepatitis C Program.
  • Develop skills in data quality assessment, data interpretation, and public health reporting.
  • Collaborate with epidemiologists, data analysts, and program staff within the State Epidemiology Section.
  • Contribute to actionable recommendations that may inform statewide strategies to improve outcomes for infants exposed to hepatitis C.

Qualifications

Freshman, Sophomore, Jr, Sr enrolled in a Georgia state and/or College. Must be enrolled during internship.

The DPH Commissioner and agency leaders encourage all employees to engage in regular wellness activities and to make lifestyle choices that promote health and well-being. 

The use of physical activity breaks during the workday is authorized to support this philosophy and help employees meet their wellness goals. A maximum of 30 minutes of physical activity may be allocated per workday, typically in the form of two 15-minute breaks or one 30-minute break.

Employment Information

State of Georgia employees are subject to the rules of the State Personnel Board regarding salary.

DPH accepts educational credentials recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) as valid. DPH will contact educational institutions to verify degrees, diplomas, licensures, and other relevant credentials.

The candidate selected for this position may be subject to pre-employment drug screening and a criminal background check.

Relocation assistance is not provided.
