The Office of AIDS (OA) is a division within the California Department of Public Health, Center for Infectious Diseases. OA works collaboratively with state and federal agencies, local health jurisdictions, universities, and community-based organizations to ensure that efforts to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic are targeted and effective.

Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by working collaboratively with state and federal agencies, local health jurisdictions (LHJ), universities, and community-based organizations to ensure efforts to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic are targeted and effective by leveraging data and technology to advance goals, inform action and accountability, strengthen the science base of our services, and expand surveillance systems for evidence-based decision making.

The Research Scientist Supervisor II (RSS II) supervises, directs and manages all aspects of HIV case and incidence surveillance in California, including managing the activities of the Quality Management Unit (QMU), the Data Management Unit (DMU) and the Data Analysis and Matching Unit (DAMU). The RSS II supervises  staff focused on conducting complex analyses of surveillance data to improve prevention, care, and treatment programs in California, developing dissemination products based on surveillance data, completing complex data requests, developing new and complex data management processes, ensuring complete reporting from all California clinical laboratories, and overseeing 61 LHJ surveillance contracts. Lastly, the RSS II is responsible for overseeing data security and confidentiality issues for the Surveillance Section and surveillance activities at all LHJs in California. This position may be required to travel up to 5%.
