Substance Use Counselor U31

Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to counsel and aid individuals and families requiring assistance dealing with
substance abuse problems. Monitor condition of clients to evaluate success of therapy and adapts treatment
and rehabilitation programs.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic
meetings.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Facilitates group sessions to discuss issues, problems or concerns; and conducts substance abuse education programs.

  • Counsels, advises and refers clients to available social services, community resources, medical or psychiatric treatment, and housing and employment assistance programs.

  • Evaluates client's situation to determine specific needs and services, to establish goals and objectives for treatment and rehabilitation plans, and to assess the effectiveness and achievement of recommended treatment plans.

  • Interviews clients to obtain information to compile an economic, legal, family, lifestyle, substance abuse use/abuse and medical history record.

  • Explains program eligibility requirements, guidelines and clinic fees to clients and their families.

  • Participates in staff development programs and quality assurance activities.

  • Documents client treatment progress, prepares reports and correspondence, and maintains records and files.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social or Human Services or related discipline.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL

  • Must be certified as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the State of Kentucky (KRS 309.083).

OR

  • Become certified within one (1) year of hire date in accordance with KRS 309.0831.

METHADONE AND TUBERCULOSIS PROGRAMS

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as mandated by OSHA.

  • Must work a varied schedule.

  • Must provide one's own source of transportation.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

MORE CENTER

  • Must submit to, and pass, annual criminal history checks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
