Why does the job exist?

 
The primary purpose of the Speech & Language Pathologist is to evaluate, plan, direct, and treat all patients referred to speech/langauage pathology treatments to restore function and prevent disability following disease or injury.

How does it get done?

 
Conduct initial evaluation and assessment of residents or patients referred by physicians.
Diagnoses and develop individual therapy plans.
Provides training and education to family, caregivers, and other professionals.

Who are the customers?

 
Residents at a long-term care facility.

Ideal Candidate

 
Will have:
The ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
The ability to function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.

Minimum Qualification

 
Licensed as a Speech Language Pathologist by the State of New Mexico and two (2) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

 
This position is designated as safety sensitive.  Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.  Will be screened for tuberculosis (TB) upon hire.  Employment is subject to nationwide criminal background check (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.   Licensure to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist in New Mexico.

Working Conditions

 
Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., nurses' stations, resident rooms, etc.).
Moves intermittently during working hours.
Is subject to frequent interruptions.
Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc.,
Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department directors.
Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,
Is subject to exercising and massaging residents.
Is subject to lifting, carrying and supporting residents.
Must be constantly alert for resident safety.
Attends and participates in continuing educational programs as may be required by current regulations.

Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
