Intern Responsibilities / Projects: 

 Projects could include:

  • Intern Responsibilities / Projects: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Policy, Planning, and Operational Support (PPOs) Administration offers a dynamic internship program designed to provide students with hands-on experience in public service, strategic planning, and operational support. Interns will gain valuable insight into state government and contribute to programs that impact the health and well-being of Michigan residents. Policy and Planning Bureau: Oversees the development and implementation of inter-and intra-departmental policies and supports MDHHS’ strategic priorities. The internship will be hosted by the Healthcare Workforce Division, which oversees the development, implementation and coordination of crosscutting and innovative policies and programs.

Office of Nursing Programs:

• Assist with social media campaigns, including creating infographics and related language. 

• Assist with skills assessment program implementation. Depending on the structure, this may include tracking registration, collecting payment, ordering supplies, coordinating scheduling, etc. 

• Help to program surveys, analyze responses, and support resulting report creation (e.g., we are currently seeking to survey Chief Nursing Officers regarding workplace safety). 

Workforce/Access Section:

• Support in provider validation for the shortage designation process, by collecting and using several data sources for provider updates in the designation system. Collecting data primarily through surveys of provider offices and a combination of supplemental data sources such as online resources and available data sets (i.e., Medicaid Claims Data, LARA). Reaching out to interested Auto-HPSAs and NHSC site administrators to validate their provider data for HPSA updates and rescores. 

• Updating list of health indicators and key health measures for the Statewide Community Health Needs Assessment update process. This includes maintaining a listing of all safety net sites and monitoring statewide vital statistics, population trends, health care data and the Michigan BRFSS within the MDHHS data site to look for trends that could lead to access issues. In addition to conducting literature review of existing local, state, and national reports and identifying available datasets/data sources and any new recommended measures (e.g., broadband/telehealth access data, inclusion of NPs) 

• Provide support and assistance to current program staff with recruitment and retention programs, including loan repayment programs: o Answering emails that come into the public MIOTA email box. o Reaching out to initiated NHSC site applications to offer application/program TA. o Application intake for MSLRP, screening applications, reach out to providers for revisions, drafting contracts and work verification forms, and sending work verification forms with program information to new participants. o Supporting screening and contracting processes with NLRP. An intern could assist in sending screened out or ineligible emails for NLRP. An intern could also schedule interviews for NLRP staff


Requirements

At the time of internship, must be currently enrolled pursuing your bachelor's or master's degree in one of the below areas of study:
Public Policy/Social Work/Human Services
