The Asthma Control Program is within the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau (EHEB) in the Center for Health Protection under the Public Health Division in NMHealth.

Why does the job exist?

 
This position is part of the Asthma Control Program team within the Epidemiology and Response Division¿s (Center for Health Protection) Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau.  This position works closely with team members to: expand collaboration among asthma stakeholders; identify and execute evidence-based interventions; produce and disseminate asthma-related health messaging and materials; and assist with health education, planning, evaluation, grant reporting, and surveillance activities aimed at reducing the burden of asthma throughout the state. It will also support environmental health initiatives and staff on-call line.  The candidate should have at least one year of experience in implementing evidence-based asthma or chronic disease interventions and have an interest in working on an environmental health team.

Key responsibilities of this position include planning, implementation and evaluation of asthma management and environmental health activities, using a variety of evidence-based programs and initiatives that advance health equity and reduce the burden of asthma. The incumbent will coordinate program efforts to expand and maintain partnerships, implement effective evidence-based asthma programming, and develop communication messages, materials, and campaigns, manage contracts; and facilitate work groups and councils.

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate will have experience in:

1. Public health principles, theories, and approaches (such as an education or work in health education, community health, public health, environmental health, or health communications).
2. Health communications: includes advanced writing skills for a variety of audiences, including report writing and creation of tailored educational materials, use of health communication theories and models, and an understanding of health literacy practices.
3. Managing and supporting grants and contracts including contract development and oversight.
4. Community and partnership development, engagement, and sustainability.
5. Experience locating and using public health data to support public health initiatives and use of logic models for program planning.
6. Experience in grant applications, grant reporting, and working with federal partners (such as CDC, SAMHSA, HRSA, etc).

Minimum Qualification

 

Associate's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Education, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Family Studies/Services, Social Sciences, or Human Services and one (1) year of experience as a social work assistant and/or in social or community coordination, working with communities, working on health or social service related matters, social work/case management experience, and/or behavioral health care. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting.  Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required.  Some travel with the occasional overnight stay may be required.
