The New Mexico Department of Health is a centralized state agency that ensures safety net services to all New Mexicans through the many programs and services.  The NMDOH, in order to ensure health equity, we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico.  Public Health Division helps meet the needs of New Mexico with their multi-disciplinary teams including Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Children's Medical Services (CMS), Health Promotion, Disease Intervention Team, and Health Services which includes Breast and Cervical Cancer screening, Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) prevention, screening and treatment, Medication for Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorder (MAUD/MOUD), Immunizations, Tuberculosis (TB) screening and treatment and emergency response.

Why does the job exist?

 
This position supports and delivers various public health programs primarily in the Santa Fe and Los Alamos  Public Health Offices, which may include, but is not limited to: Health Services including 1) Breast and Cervical Cancer screening and referral; 2) STI screening, treatment and referrals; 3) Immunizations; 4) Family Planning services; 5) Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) services; 6) Tuberculosis, screening and treatment; Case Management for tuberculosis and as need for other clients; Community Outreach; Health Promotion; and Disease Management. This work is done through advocacy, adherence to clinical protocols, standing orders, education and policies and procedures.

How does it get done?

 
This position administers nursing care to clients in an autonomous environment by utilizing the laws, principle, practices, standing orders, and techniques of professional nursing. This position must make program-specific decisions per protocols, and prioritize client needs accordingly, and must address any issue not covered in protocols with Regional Health Officer or a licensed clinician. This position advises on health maintenance and disease prevention.

This position serves the population of New Mexico and specifically the population of Santa Fe and Los Alamos County and the NE Region.  The RN supports the functions of the providers, clerks, and other program staff to achieve common public health goals.

Ideal Candidate

 
Strong critical thinking skills.  Strong organizational skills.  Ability to work autonomously as well as part of team.  Ability to think independently and problem solve. Must be comfortable screening clients for risks including sexually transmitted infections and drug use. Public health experience a plus. Spanish speaking a plus.

Minimum Qualification

 
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Working Conditions

 
Primary work site is the Santa Fe Public Health Office based in Santa Fe, New Mexico but this position will be required to travel to Los Alamos regularly.  Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and sit for periods of time.  Must be able to travel/drive for extended periods throughout the region on occasion. Must be able to speak, hear and see. Work is usually preformed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive telephone usage and direct client contact.  Assist with outreach activities in the community on occasion.
