Senior Communicable Disease Investigator

This position is eligible for appointment at Step 1, $71,032.00 annually. County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5. 

Future Salary Increases

** June 2026 – 4.26% increase to base pay (3.5% Across-the-Board + 0.76% Market Adjustment) 

** June 2027 – 3.76% increase to base pay (3% Across-the- Board + 0.76% Market Adjustment) 



Public Health Services (PHS) has an immediate opening for a Senior Communicable Disease Investigator in the HIV, STD, and Hepatitis Branch. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting complex communicable disease investigations; performing interviews of cases and contacts; documenting activities in surveillance system; providing mentoring to less experienced investigators; and assisting with outbreak investigations. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill vacancies in other PHS areas.

Ideal Candidate

• Experience with communicable disease investigations as a lead or mentor
 • Knowledge of community resources for HIV and STIs 
 • Experience mentoring employees in the areas of HIV counseling and testing, partner services, or STD/HIV disease investigation
 • Strong interpersonal skills to provide feedback and development of plans for complicated or difficult cases
 • Proven ability to maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
 • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
 • Flexibility with changing work situations
 • Perform assignments with minimal supervision and utilize sound judgment in making decisions
 • Communication of potential risk and assist with mitigation of risk

Hiring and Timeline

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins June 15, 2026.  Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university in a behavioral, social, natural science, or a closely related field; AND, two (2) years of specialized investigative experience in the enforcement of communicable disease laws, rules and regulations; OR,
  2. One (1) year of work experience as a Communicable Disease Investigator in the County of San Diego; OR,
  3. Six (6) years of work experience in communicable disease investigations.

Condition Of Employment

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

Evaluation Process

Qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in the supplemental questionnaire.
