New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides mental health care to adolescents, adults and geriatric patients. The Rehabilitation Services Department offers social, health and basic job skills type classes/activities. Patients assigned to Adult Psychiatric Division, Forensic and Adolescent Care unit who meet certain requirements of eligibility are able to participate in the work program.

Why does the job exist?

 
To provide vocational training, instruction, basic job skills and supervision to work program participants and assist in the day-to­day operation of the Turquoise Cafe. This position also supports other areas within Rehabilitation Services as needed/directed.

How does it get done?

 
Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Turquoise Cafe. This includes but is not limited to: supervising patients in the work program, providing basic job skills associated with operating a small restaurant, providing basic food handling instructions/ procedures, instructing how to safely sanitize care areas, preparing meals, cashier operations, ordering supplies, managing inventory, completing supply requisitions, completing revenue reports, maintaining the cafe in a clean, neat, and orderly fashion, completing patient progress notes in AVATAR, completing all annual training and any additional training required by NMBHI, DOH or the Vocation Program Manager. This position WILL require certification as a Food Handler within six months from date of hire.

All patients, residents, clients associated with NMBHI.

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate will have basic food handling experience. Experience providing instruction and/or facilitating classes/ activities to persons who suffer from a mental illness is a plus. Ability to multi-task, possess a team player attitude, ability to create comprehensive progress notes detailing the positive and negative aspects of a patient's attendance/participation in the work program, groups, classes/activities. Maintain a high level of enthusiasm, be compassionate, understanding, patient and thoughtful. Flexibility when facilitating classes/activities, be able to transition between teaching points quickly to capture a majority of the audience's attention. Be respectful, tactful, professional to everyone, all the time. Be innovative and creative and present the most beneficial learning material to the patients. Within six (6) months of hire, candidate will be required to obtain certification as a Food Handler and maintain this certification while assigned to the Turquoise Cafe.

Minimum Qualification

 
High School diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of experience in classroom demonstration and/or teaching specific social and life skills on a one-to-one basis. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) months may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess a valid Driver's License

Must obtain a Defensive Driving Certificate

Working Conditions

 
The main duties of this position will be performed in a cafe/restaurant setting. There may be times when the candidate is directed to assist in other areas, classroom, gymnasium, or outdoors such as the horticulture area. The candidate will have exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and computer, cash register and phone usage. Exposure to mentally and behaviorally challenged patients who may exhibit unpredictable and sometimes violent behaviors that may create volatile situations should be anticipated.
