The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six different divisions including hospital level inpatient psychiatric care for both civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for people with behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. As the largest behavioral health complex in the state, inpatient/residential care is provided to over 250 New Mexicans every day, along with 400 outpatient clients a month. There are over 600 employees across all the divisions of NMBHI to ensure high-quality treatment and care is delivered.

Why does the job exist?

 
Security guards patrol and inspect property to protect against fire, theft, vandalism, terrorism, and illegal activity. They protect their employer's property, enforce laws on the property, and deter criminal activity, and other problems. These workers may be armed. They use various forms of telecommunications to call for assistance from police, fire, or emergency medical services. Security guards write comprehensive reports outlining their observations and activities during their assigned shifts. They also may interview witnesses or victims, prepare case reports, and testify in court.
In contrast guards assigned to mobile patrol drive or walk from one location to another and conduct security

How does it get done?

 
Secures assigned buildings and grounds, assists in controlling disorders, reports problems occurring while on duty, and reports major disturbances to local law enforcement authorities.

Patrols and inspects property to protect against fire, theft, vandalism, potential hazards, illegal activity, and loss.

Responsible for protecting agencies' investments, enforcing laws on the property, and deterring criminal activity or other problems.

The Security guard ensures the safety and security of all individuals associated with NMBHI, including, staff, patients, residents, visitors, and property.

Ideal Candidate

 
The Ideal Candidate would have:

-Prior experience in law enforcement or public safety preferred. 

-Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress or emergency situations Strong observant, communication, and conflict de-escalation skills. 

-Ability to interact respectfully with staff, patients, visitors and the public. Knowledge of safety procedures, emergency response, and incident reporting.

Minimum Qualification

 
Eighth grade education.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess a valid Driver's License

Must obtain a Driver's Defensive Certificate

Working Conditions

 
Effective 01/01/2015, the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute became a 100% Tobacco Free/E-Cigarette Free Campus. As such, no tobacco, tobacco products or E-Cigarette products are permitted on any part of the campus.

Work is performed throughout the facility, including indoor and outdoor areas, and may involve prolong standing, walking, and patrols. Security guards may be exposed to unpredictable situations and must be able to respond to emergencies, disturbances, or safety concerns.
