Join the Louisiana Department of Health and play a vital role in protecting public health across the state. This leadership position within the Louisiana Office of Public Health oversees the Buildings and Premises Program and Infectious Waste Program, ensuring that healthcare facilities, schools, childcare centers, and other institutions meet the health and safety standards established by the Louisiana State Sanitary Code. The selected candidate will guide statewide inspection and regulatory efforts, support and train a network of more than 200 field sanitarians, and help manage critical systems that monitor compliance and environmental health risks. This role offers the opportunity to influence statewide public health protections, strengthen regulatory programs, and ensure safe environments for Louisiana communities.

Requirements

Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license plus one of the following:

Four years of experience as a sanitarian; OR

A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus three years of experience as a sanitarian.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Job Duties:
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and forms for uniform inspections of institutional and infectious waste facilities and vehicles statewide.

  • Train sanitarians on reviewing plans, conducting preliminary and final inspections, performing routine inspections, and investigating complaints in accordance with Louisiana State Sanitary Code regulations.

  • Conduct audits of parishes to ensure compliance with standardized procedures and proper execution of inspections.

  • Observe, review, and document subordinate employee performance; communicate performance expectations and conduct timely, consistent appraisals (PES).

  • Supervise and provide guidance to one Sanitarian Services staff member.

  • Develop and implement a statewide training program for sanitarians on institutional facility inspections and procedures.

  • Serve as a liaison between the Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Health and Hospitals Health Standards Section, and the State Fire Marshall’s Office.

  • Act as a regulatory officer to establish procedures for issuing compliance orders, tracking facility and private premise deficiencies, and assisting with follow-up actions including suspension or revocation of permits.
