This role offers a unique opportunity to combine technical public health expertise with statewide policy and legislative engagement. Serving as a Sanitarian Specialist within the Office of Public Health, the position supports the Onsite Wastewater and Private Water Supply Programs while acting as the Bureau’s Legislative Liaison. The incumbent plays a key role in program development, regulatory standardization, and legislative coordination, working closely with bureau leadership to support rulemaking, compliance, and public health protections across Louisiana. This position requires statewide travel and provides meaningful exposure to both field operations and the legislative process, making it ideal for a Registered Sanitarian seeking a high-impact, leadership-oriented role.

Requirements

Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license plus one of the following:

Four years of experience as a sanitarian; OR

A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus three years of experience as a sanitarian.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Job Duties:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standardized operating procedures, forms, and processes for statewide sewage permitting and private water well programs; coordinate with regional sanitarian sewage coordinators to ensure consistent implementation and training.
  • Train and support sanitarians in reviewing plans, conducting site surveys, performing inspections (including final and existing system inspections), and providing uniform education to homeowners, property owners, and agents on onsite wastewater treatment systems and private water wells.
  • Evaluate parish ordinances for compliance with state laws and regulations related to sewage treatment and disposal; serve as the state liaison to parish and local governing authorities to promote ordinance development that mitigates sewage-related public health issues; conduct routine parish audits to ensure standardized procedures are followed.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate services delivered by the Onsite Wastewater (OSWW) program monitor; oversee procedural activities related to complaints, permit suspensions or revocations, installer license actions, compliance orders, and administrative proceedings; supervise one Sanitarian Services position.
  • Develop and implement curricula, training programs, and testing processes for onsite wastewater treatment system installers, maintenance providers, and homeowners; establish continuing education and refresher training requirements for sanitarians; attend trainings, proctor and evaluate exams, and report results.
  • Maintain training records and databases; organize installer documentation; perform field audits to ensure adherence to standard operating guidelines and operational procedures as directed by program leadership.
