Why does the job exist?

 
This position will lead, guide and direct the delivery of respiratory therapy services in the facility in accordance with local, state and federal regulations, standards and established facility policies and procedures to provide appropriate care and services to residents of a long-term care facility.

How does it get done?

 
Develops and implements processes and systems to effectively lead, guide and direct the delivery of respiratory therapy services including but not limited to processes for the evaluation initiation, maintenance and discontinuation of treatment, discharge and all associated documentation requirements for residents in the facility.
Participates in daily, weekly, and/or monthly rehabilitative and interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss residents' therapy progression.
Ensures respiratory therapy equipment and supplies is stored, used and sanitized, disinfected and/or cleaned properly and safely in the facility.  This includes ensuring adequate supplies of clean, calibrated equipment and disposable supplies.

The ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
The ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
The willingness to handle difficult residents with patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.
The ability to function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel and support agencies.
Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of team work and team concept.

Minimum Qualification

 
Associate degree from a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) School and two (2) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience. State Licensure in good standing as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Employment Requirements

 
Will be screened for tuberculosis (TB) upon hire.  Employment is subject to nationwide criminal background check pursuant to New Mexico Caregivers Criminal Screening Act(Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

 
Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., nurses¿ stations, resident rooms, etc.).
Moves intermittently during working hours.
Is subject to frequent interruptions.
Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc.,
Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department directors.
Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
