Why does the job exist?

 
The Registered Nurse (RN) Supervisor position at the New Mexico State Veterans Home exists to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, and compassionate nursing care to residents¿many of whom are aging veterans with complex medical and emotional needs. This role is essential in providing leadership, oversight, and clinical expertise to the nursing team, while also serving as a key liaison between staff, residents, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare providers. The RN Supervisor is responsible for maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, ensuring that standards of care are met, and that documentation is accurate and timely. Additionally, this position plays a critical role in training and mentoring nursing staff, managing day-to-day clinical operations, and responding to medical or administrative emergencies. Ultimately, the RN Supervisor helps uphold the mission of the Veterans Home by promoting dignity, respect, and quality of life for New Mexico¿s veteran population.

How does it get done?

 
Provide direct supervision and clinical oversight to licensed nurses, nursing assistants, and support staff, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of nursing care.
Coordinate nursing activities and implement nursing standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with facility and regulatory requirements.
Ensure residents receive high-quality, person-centered care aligned with medical orders, individualized care plans, and state and federal regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, and CMS guidelines.
Monitor and maintain compliance with all applicable laws, accreditation standards, and facility policies.
Participate actively in interdisciplinary care planning meetings, resident assessments, and quality improvement initiatives to support comprehensive care strategies.
Serve as a resource and liaison between nursing staff, administration, residents, families, and other healthcare providers.
Respond promptly and effectively to medical emergencies and urgent resident needs, making sound clinical decisions and delegating appropriately.
Conduct routine audits of clinical documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to facility and regulatory standards.
Lead and support staff development efforts by providing training, mentorship, performance evaluations, and assisting with on boarding and continuing education.
Assist with scheduling, staffing, budget, and resource management in collaboration with nursing administration.
Promote a respectful, safe, and supportive work environment that upholds the values of dignity, respect, and quality of life for the veteran residents.
Participate in infection control programs and other initiatives aimed at improving resident safety and health outcomes.

Who are the customers?

 
The primary customer are the brave men and women that answered our nations call, executed their duties and now are unable to live in their respective communities due to failing health.  This job will also support the widows of the service men and women to include parents that have lost children in combat (Gold Star Parents)

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate for the Registered Nurse Supervisor position is a highly skilled and licensed Registered Nurse (RN) with proven leadership experience in long-term care or related healthcare settings. The candidate must possess an active, unrestricted RN license issued by the New Mexico Board of Nursing or by a compact state participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). A minimum of three (3) years of professional nursing experience, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory or charge nurse capacity, is typically required. Experience working with geriatric and veteran populations is highly desirable.

This position requires advanced knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and regulations, as well as a strong understanding of federal and state compliance standards, including OSHA, HIPAA, and CMS. The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills, and has the ability to manage nursing operations, supervise staff, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems and familiarity with veteran-specific care needs are essential. A strong commitment to the core values of dignity, respect, and service to veterans is expected in this role.

Minimum Qualification

 
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and five (5) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

This position is designated safety sensitive.  Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules, and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.

Must possess and maintain a valid American Heart Association BLS / CPR Certification

Employment is subject to criminal background check pursuant to New Mexico Caregivers Criminal Screening Act, (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license. 

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Must possess and maintain a valid Safe Food Handling Certificate or receive within 1 week of date of hire.

Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training.

Must sign and observe confidentiality agreement.

Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.

Occasional travel for training & meetings and driving a State of NM owned motor vehicle may be required; Working hours may include weekends, holidays, overtime, and callback hours. Essential functions of the job and specific physical ability requirements will be available at the time of interview or may be obtained at the New Mexico Veterans' Home Human Resources office.

Working Conditions

 
Work is performed within a long-term facility with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT). Walking throughout the facility and frequent communication and interaction with residents, staff, and the public.  Periods of walking, standing, bending pushing, pulling, lifting, and stretching for a variety of activities may be required.  Must be able to function under pressure and stressful situations Health hazards such as exposure to contagious viruses and diseases.  May also include routine exposure to public, fellow employees, and facility resident illness, stressful situation, and bodily fluids, as well as exposure to physical and/or verbal abuse. Occasional travel for training & meetings and driving a State of NM owned motor vehicle may be required; some lifting; extended hours to meet deadlines will be required. Working hours may include on-call, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and callback hours.  Essential functions of the job and physical ability requirements will be available at the time of interview or may be obtained at the New Mexico Veterans' Home Human Resources Office
