Community Based Services is the outpatient division of the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute. Community Based Services (CBS) provides comprehensive, high quality behavioral health services to individuals residing in a tri-county area (San Miguel, Mora and Guadalupe). The Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program (PSR) at CBS provides on-site integrated/classroom instruction and activities to help individuals experiencing mental illness to capitalize on personal strengths, to develop coping strategies and skills to deal with functional deficits, and to develop a supportive environment in which to function as independently as possible.

The recreational therapist position exists to provide psychosocial rehabilitation services in an integrated/classroom setting to clients who have a severe mental illness or co-occurring substance use issue.

How does it get done?

 
Key job responsibilities include providing integrated classes/activities to clients experiencing severe mental illness or co­occurring substance use issues in the areas of basic living skills development, psychosocial skills training and therapeutic socialization. Incumbent will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to assist clients in their recovery process. They will participate in the planning of activities and curriculum. They will complete documentation to support/justify the provision of services and client progress, to include functional assessments, treatment plans and daily progress notes.

Who are the customers?

 
Qualified adults, ages 18 and over, experiencing severe mental illness or co-occurring substance use issues who want to increase their basic living skills, psychosocial skills and therapeutic socialization in order to function as independently as possible.

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate will have experience working directly with individuals from the target population (individuals with severe mental illness or co-occurring substance use issues). They must have good interpersonal skills, be empathetic, a team player, adaptable and willing to learn. They must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. They should have excellent time management skills, be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines. The ideal candidate must also have good writing skills and be effective in their verbal communication.

Minimum Qualification

 
High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.

2.CRIMINAL RECORDS BACKGROUND CHECK-Must successfully complete post offer pre-employment criminal records background check. Employment is conditional pending the results of criminal records background checks. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Working Conditions

 
This position will perform in an outpatient office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Exposure to mentally and behaviorally challenged clients who may exhibit unpredictable and potentially violent behavior. Effective 01/01/2015, New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute became 100% tobacco free/e-cigarette free campus. As such, no tobacco, tobacco products ore-cigarette products are permitted on any part of the campus. The position is located at Community Based Services. The shift is 7:30 am - 3:30 pm.
