The mission of the Louisiana Department of Health is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana.



Join the Bureau of Media and Communications (BMAC) at the Louisiana Department of Health and help shape how vital public health information reaches communities across the state. BMAC leads the department’s internal and external communications, working closely with executive leadership, program offices, and legislative partners to ensure clear, strategic messaging that supports the department’s mission. Requirements

Seven years of experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, content creation, social media management, or graphic design; OR

Six years of full-time experience in any field plus four years of experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, content creation, social media management, or graphic design; OR

A bachelor's degree plus four years of experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, content creation, social media management, or graphic design; OR

An advanced degree in public relations, marketing, communications, journalism, or English plus three years of experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, content creation, social media management, or graphic design.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

Job Duties:

• Develop and provide strategic talking points to support department initiatives at the state and national level for agency leadership and subject matter experts.

• Research policy issues and public health topics to draft speeches, briefing materials, and messaging for leadership engagement with the Governor’s Office, legislators, media, and external stakeholders.

• Write and edit public-facing communications including news releases, articles, and op-eds for external publications.

• Monitor departmental activities and maintain strong relationships with program offices to ensure messaging reflects current priorities, initiatives, and public health guidance.

• Support the press secretary by researching issues and preparing responses to media inquiries and information requests.

• Assist with planning and execution of media events, including press conferences and briefings, in coordination with the deputy press secretary.

• Identify opportunities to increase public awareness and education on key health topics by reviewing agency reports and translating complex information into clear, accessible communications.

• Collaborate with program offices and regional leadership to develop targeted communication strategies and messaging for specific populations and regions.

• Develop strategic messaging to support bureau and departmental initiatives, including advancing the bureau’s health equity communication efforts.

• Support digital communications by assisting with development of social media content and maintaining accurate, up-to-date information on the department’s website.
