Join the Louisiana Office of Public Health as a Public Health Laboratory Scientist in the OPH Central Laboratory in Baton Rouge. This position offers hands-on experience in the Environmental Inorganics Section, analyzing drinking water samples using advanced chemical testing methods. Ideal candidates have experience in chemistry, environmental, or drinking water testing, including EPA methods. You’ll collaborate daily with laboratory and program staff, as well as regulatory agencies, contributing directly to the safety and health of communities across Louisiana, with minimal travel required.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree in a biological, environmental, or chemical science.

SPECIAL SECURITY REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check and/or security clearance, including but not limited to those required for the Federal Select Agent Program and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners license requirements.

CLINICAL TESTING POSITIONS:
For positions which involve processing and analysis of human specimens and/or the generation or interpretation of laboratory results that may be used in the diagnosis or treatment of a disease or condition in humans, the incumbent must have a current license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist (CLS-G) or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist Specialist (CLS-S) issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME).

A temporary license to practice as a CLS-G or a CLS-S issued by the LSBME shall fulfill this requirement only for the limited time granted by the LSBME. The incumbent is required to satisfy the requirements for a CLS-G or CLS-S permanent license prior to the expiration of the temporary license.

  • Independently performs chemical, physical, and/or biological analyses of specimens to detect, quantify, and characterize substances or organisms of public health or regulatory significance.
  • Receives, evaluates, and tracks specimens, ensuring they meet acceptance criteria, proper handling, and chain-of-custody requirements, and tests them in a timely manner.
  • Maintains all aspects of the testing process, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical procedures, to meet regulatory and laboratory acceptance guidelines prior to releasing results.
  • Uses the laboratory information management system (LIMS) to record specimen data, generate reports, and refer specimens for confirmatory testing as needed.
  • Performs quality control and quality assurance activities, including calibration and maintenance of equipment, troubleshooting QC failures, and completing proficiency testing and competency assessments.
  • Maintains laboratory safety, security, and regulatory compliance through ongoing training, continuing education, and adherence to licensure and certification requirements.
