The New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) works to ensure a healthier New Mexico. The NMHealth¿s mission is to ensure health equity and works with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico. The NMHealth Office of Injury and Violence Prevention (OIVP) is a section of the Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau within the Center for Health Protection located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Currently, the OIVP has prevention and evaluation programs for firearm violence, sexual violence, adult falls, suicide, and childhood injury, and is in the process of adding additional prevention programs. The OIVP houses and maintains surveillance systems for the New Mexico Child Fatality Review (CFR) program and the New Mexico Violent Death Reporting System (NMVDRS). The OIVP is divided into four units - the Epidemiology Unit, the Injury Prevention Program Unit, the Violence Prevention Program Unit, and the Evaluation Unit. The Public Health Epidemiologist-Advanced position is located within the Epidemiology Unit.

Why does the job exist?

 
The public health epidemiologist studies and analyzes the distribution (who, when, and where), patterns (including temporal-spatial) and determinants (risk factors and causes) of injuries in New Mexico. The candidate will design, develop, conduct epidemiological/statistical analyses as well as evaluate injury interventions. The candidate will use statistical software (such as SAS, R, or STATA) to analyze injury-related datasets and provide injury reports to programs in the Office of Injury and Violence Prevention, and to funders including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The candidate will maintain databases of injury data, prepare and present reports, use data to initiate and lead prevention efforts, and gain and maintain knowledge of current practices in the field of injury prevention for the citizens of New Mexico. This position will work closely with injury & violence prevention program staff to support and provide leadership to injury prevention programs and initiatives including the New Mexico Injury Prevention Coalition. The successful candidate will also raise awareness by presenting injury-related information to injury preventionists, medical specialists, and the public at various venues.

How does it get done?

 
Advanced statistical analysis of injury-related data and firearm data including epidemiological surveillance, data requests, bill analyses, and data dissemination; support to injury & violence prevention programs, partners and communities with data analysis needs; grant management and coordination for the NMVDRS; collect, clean and perform data quality checks as well as epidemiological analysis, reporting, and data dissemination for the NM VDRS; monitor the NM VDRS¿s project objectives and activities.

Ideal Candidate

 
Ideal candidate will have four (4) or more years of postgraduate experience in public health surveillance, data management and analysis using statistical software (SAS, STATA, or R), as well as experience linking data among multiple data systems. The candidate should be skilled in complex data analysis, interpretation of results and presentation of findings to different audiences. The candidate should be team-oriented and adaptable to changing work processes and environments.

Minimum Qualification

 

Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and one (1) year in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching and lifting to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel is required.
