The goal of the Bureau of Infectious Diseases (BID) is to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases (e.g., foodborne outbreaks, general infectious diseases, healthcare-associated infections, influenza, meningitis, tuberculosis, vaccine-preventable diseases, waterborne outbreaks, zoonotic diseases and vector-borne diseases).

What You'll Do:

The Bureau of Infectious Diseases is seeking a part-time Public Health Entomologist to join the Zoonotic Disease Program. This position will independently conduct field & laboratory investigations related to arthropod-borne & zoonotic disease or related to arthropods, which are agents of disease or injury. This position will also evaluate the effectiveness of control measures on vector populations. Additional job duties may include: 

  • Gather & analyze data on the efficacy of pesticides applied experimentally or in routine practice & makes recommendations from the results.
  • Maintain data on distribution, biology & public health importance of arthropods in Ohio.
  • Receive & identify specimens submitted by local health departments, medical facilities & the general public.
  • Perform pooling, serum separation & tissue extraction of disease surveillance specimens & suspect disease vector pest species for microbiological testing.
  • Respond to questions from local health agencies, medical personnel & general public.
  • Design & create educational materials (e.g., informative fliers, training manuals, reports) concerned with arthropod-borne diseases & their vectors & other arthropods of public health importance.

Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 12:00pm. This is an hourly position, with a pay range of 32 on the OCSEA Pay Range Schedule.

Qualifications

Position Qualifications

Completion of graduate core program in biological sciences (e.g., entomology; biochemistry; microbiology; molecular genetics; plant biology; biology; zoology; ecology) to include coursework in entomology, insect physiology & structure & laboratory procedures. 

OR

Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above. 

Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Completion of a graduate or advanced degree in entomology

  • Experience conducting entomological field and laboratory investigations 

  • Experience collecting and/or identifying mosquitoes or ticks 

  • Experience working with arthropods, surveillance & control equipment, and chemicals

  • Experience analyzing data and preparing scientific or technical reports

  • Experience communicating with general public and government agencies (e.g., training, presentations, outreach)

  • Experience with public health surveillance programs and interagency coordination

  • Experience responding to public health emergencies or threats

  • Experience developing educational materials (e.g., manuals, brochures, training resources)

  • Education or experience in biosafety procedures and laboratory safety practices

  • Experience with specialized entomological lab equipment and insectary maintenance
