The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six different divisions including hospital level inpatient psychiatric care for both civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for people with behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. As the largest behavioral health complex in the state, inpatient/residential care is provided to over 250 New Mexicans every day, along with 400 outpatient clients a month. There are over 600 employees across all the divisions of NMBHI to ensure high-quality treatment and care is delivered.

Why does the job exist?

 
The psychologist position is an integral member of the treatment team on the Forensic Division of NMBHI. The position completes competency evaluations for the state and provides a formal report back to the judicial system. This position helps patients move through the hospital stay in order to continue with the legal process as appropriate. These evaluations are invidualized and consist of completing clinical interviews, formal psychological testing, and record reviews.

Complete comprehensive competency assessments.
Complete evidence-based psychological testing.
Participate on the interdisciplinary treatment team.
Actively contribute to treatment planning and provide feedback to behavioral health therapists and social workers.
Testify in court as needed.

Who are the customers?

 
Patients are referred to NMBHI from the judicial system in response to not being found competency to proceed in trial. These patients are sent for restoration treatment in order to aid and assist in moving forward with the charges against them. Referral may come from any judicial district in the state. At times, patients may stay beyond the initial competency restoration treatment for up to the length of time had they been convicted of the crime they are alleged to have committed.

Ideal Candidate

 
Experience in forensic psychology.
Experience in completing competency restoration evaluations.
Experience in psychometric testing and report writing.
Experience as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
Experience testifying in court

Minimum Qualification

 
Licensed by the New Mexico Board of Psychologist Examiners and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required experience.

2.CRIMINAL RECORDS BACKGROUND CHECK-Must successfully complete post offer pre-employment criminal records background check. Employment is conditional pending the results of criminal records background checks.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Working Conditions

 
This position will work in an office setting with exposure to Visual Video Display Terminal, personal computer, and phone usage. The work is in a psychiatric hospital setting with patients who struggle with mental illness and could present with unpredictable behavior.
