THIS POSTING WILL BE USED FOR ONGOING RECRUITMENT AND MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME.  APPLICANT LISTS MAY BE SCREENED MORE THAN ONCE.  THIS POSITION IS A FULL-TIME JOB SHARE ARRANGEMENT SPLIT BETWEEN TWO INDIVIDUALS, EACH WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE TOTAL JOB.

Public Health Division Southwest Region is comprised of eight counties and works to promote health and wellness, improve health outcomes, and assure safety net services for all people in New Mexico.

Why does the job exist?

 
This position will provide intake, interviewing, education, screening, assessment, counseling, therapy, treatment, referrals, and support to priority patients with behavioral health needs for the Community Wellness Program (CWP) and other Southwest Region programs and clinics.   Must be a Certified Nurse Practitioner in accordance with NMSA 1978, 61-3-23.2 or Certified Nurse Midwife Rule in accordance with NMAC 16.11.2 or Clinical Nurse Specialist in accordance with NMSA 1978, 61-3-23.4.   Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of receiving list.

How does it get done?

 
This position will:

Diagnose, treat and manage adults to geriatric patients with substance use disorders, including some common mental illness co-morbidities of acute or chronic nature, especially depression, anxiety and serious mental illness.    

Prescribe therapeutic agents within the scope of practice, licensure and level of individual competence, and in accordance with designated formulary aligned with the New Mexico Board of Nursing.

Provide therapeutic counseling/psychotherapy for individuals, couples and families and group psychotherapy that compliments medication assisted treatment for substance use disorders.

Promote the integration of behavioral health care/treatment within other public health programs and clinics.

Provide quality assurance and improvement to include medical record chart audits, patient interviews or surveys and statistical studies.

This position will serve clients in need of behavioral health services including serious mental disorders and substance use disorders with a special emphasis on opioid disorders.

Ideal Candidate

 
The Ideal Candidate must possess and maintain current licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife or Clinical Nurse Specialist or eligible for licensure in accordance with section 63-3-23.2 of the New Mexico Nursing Practice Act, 61-3-1 NMSA 1978 with experience in or willing to provide:

Behavioral health treatment with an emphasis on the treatment of substance abuse disorders and taking medical histories and performing patient examinations.

Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, x-rays and making diagnoses.

Prescribing appropriate medications and other therapies.

Educating patients about their health and instructing them in self-care techniques.

Referring patients to physicians and other health care providers.

Responding to medical and emergency preparedness situations.

Speaking and obtaining client health information in Spanish.

Using an electronic health record to chart patient information.

Minimum Qualification

 
Licensed by the New Mexico Board of Nursing as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), or as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) by the New Mexico Department of Health.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain Current License as Certified Nurse Practitioner in New Mexico.  Successful completion of a formal program designed for Education and Preparation of Nurse Practitioners.  Nurse Practitioners, who were initially licensed by the Board prior to January 1, 2001 with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a Nurse Practitioner Program and are currently Licensed are encouraged to apply.  Position requires successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) course.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certification from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
This position will provide services in local health offices and outreach settings throughout the Southwest Region with a focus in Las Cruces with potential exposure to communicable diseases.  Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and telemedicine settings with computer usage to link with electronic health records, video cameras, microphones and speakers to interact with behavioral health clients in-person and in remote locations.  Extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of office noise, bending, standing and lifting.  Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.  Services are provided in a clinic with diverse racial and ethnic populations, many who do not speak the English language.  May be required to work evening and/or weekend hours at various Public Health Offices.
