Why does the job exist?

 
The primary purpose of the position is to assist patients with thearpeutic exericises and activities as prescribed the Physical Therapist. This includes guiding patients through exercises, administering manual therapy techniques like massage and stretching, and using modalities such as heat or cold therapy.

How does it get done?

 
Administers specialized treatments to address physical therapy needs (Therapeutic exercises, etc).
Assists in directing activity programs and documents the progress of treatments.
Instructs, or assists in instructing patients and families with the care and use of adaptive equipment.

Who are the customers?

 
Residents at a long-term care facility.

Ideal Candidate

 
Will have:
The ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
The ability to function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.

Minimum Qualification

 
Associate degree in a relevant discipline, certification by passing the exam from the National Board for Certified Physical Therapy Assistant (CPTA) and licensure or application for licensure as a CPTA. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above certification requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required education.

Employment Requirements

 
This position is designated as safety sensitive.  Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.  Will be screened for tuberculosis (TB) upon hire.  Employment is subject to nationwide criminal background check (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.   Licensure to practice as a Physical Therapist in New Mexico.

Working Conditions

 
Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., nurses¿ stations, resident rooms, etc.).
Moves intermittently during working hours.
Is subject to frequent interruptions.
Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc.,
Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department directors.
Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,
Is subject to exercising and massaging residents.
Is subject to lifting, carrying and supporting residents.
Must be constantly alert for resident safety.
Attends and participates in continuing educational programs as may be required by current regulations.

Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (¿CMS¿), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
