Why does the job exist?

 
This position will administer medications to residents at a long-term care facility and will observe residents for expected actions and adverse reactions to medications administered.

How does it get done?

 
The incumbent will prepare verbal reports and written documentation to report issues or events related to successful or unsuccessful medication administration, changes in resident conditions and/or departures from usual and routine organizational operations.

Residents at a long-terms care facility.

Ideal Candidate

 
Will have:
The ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
The ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, and family members.
Experience with Medication Administration Record (MAR) Audits.
Experience with safety awareness of narcotic use.
The ability to function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.

Minimum Qualification

 
Certification as a Certified Medication Aide (CMA), Home Health Aide (HHA), or Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) and one (1) year of experience providing basic dietary, housekeeping, and/or laundry services in a traditional long term care facility and/or as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above certification requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

 
This position is designated as safety sensitive.  Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.  Will be screened for tuberculosis (TB) upon hire.  Employment is subject to criminal background check pursuant to New Mexico Caregivers Criminal Screening Act (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.  Must have a certification by the New Mexico Board of Nursing to practice as a Certified Medication Aide.  All applicants for this position must be licensed in accordance with Medication Aide, 61-3-10.2 NMSA 1978 and 16.12.5 through 16.12.5.21 NMAC, as applicable.

Working Conditions

 
Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., nurses¿ stations, resident rooms, etc.).
Moves intermittently during working hours.
Is subject to frequent interruptions.
Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
Communicates with nursing personnel, and medical staff.
Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
