Microbiologist II - Serology/Virology


Do you have a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related science? The Utah Public Health Lab (UPHL) needs YOU as a Chemist/Microbiologist II! to support CLIA regulated testing in the Virology and Serology section! You can keep up day to day operations in the Virology/Serology laboratory. This person will be performing serology testing for arboviral diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, rabies and hepatitis. They will perform PCR based assays to detect Chlamydia and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, HSV and VZV viruses, HCV virus, Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya viruses, Influenza and other respiratory viruses. They will interpret, clarify, explain and apply DHHS policy and procedures, business practices, federal or state laws and regulations applicable to this testing section.

Responsibilities:
 
  • Processing specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Performing molecular and serological based assays
  • Perform necropsy of animals for Rabies testing
  • Performing test validations.
  • Drafting, writing and/or updating SOPs and grants
  • Evaluating quality control and performing corrective actions
  • Performing instrument maintenance
  • Troubleshooting interfaces between laboratory equipment and laboratory information systems
  • Monitoring testing processes for accuracy and timeliness
  • Communicating with Epidemiologists and local partners
Must reside in Utah or be moving to Utah within 30 days of start date.
 
Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science or related field or 4 years closely related experience
  • Previous experience working in a clinical or research lab
  • Previous experience with PCR
  • Good communication skills
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Must meet CLIA education requirements for testing personnel in high complexity testing labs. CLIA Requirements 

Preference

May be given to applicants with:
  • Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science or related field
  • Previous experience in performing immunoassays
  • Previous experience in performing Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
  • Basic knowledge of Molecular Biology
  • Basic knowledge of Medical Microbiology
Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day between the hours of 8:00 and 5:00
