Medical Assistant STD & Refugee Clinic

The Medical Assistant STD and Refugee Clinic supports Clinicians in the Clinical Services Division by providing basic health care services such as preparing patient rooms, performing venipuncture, administering immunizations, and taking patient history to prepare the patients for evaluation by the Clinician in order to help prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

We Require

  • One year of experience working in the medical field as a Medical Assistant, including venipuncture experience, experience with electronic medical records, and experience administering vaccines or other injections

  • Certificate of Completion as a Medical Assistant from an accredited Health Care Training Program

  • High school diploma or GED

Job Contributions

  • Prepare patients for their appointments by accompanying them to the examining room and facilitating the patient flow through the practice of anticipating patient and provider’s needs

  • Performs routine medical tasks of drawing blood, administering injections, and preparing patients for examinations and treatment

  • Documents patient care using electronic or other medical records systems and computer applications in accordance with regulatory requirements, quality initiatives, policies, and procedures

  • Provides basic patient care as directed by the provider and as allowed by license, certification, or registration

  • Assists the provider with examinations of patients and administering/ordering diagnostic tests, procedures, and treatment

  • Ensures exam rooms are clean, stocked, and appropriately set up each day prior to rooming patients

  • Assists in patient education by providing informational handouts, an after-visit summary, and/or a treatment plan summary as instructed by the clinician

  • Receives and records lab test results via telephone or computer and ensures that those results and related reports are in the patient’s medical record at the time of patient's visit

Working Conditions

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel

  • Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly and requires walking and standing to a significant degree

  • Valid Arizona driver’s license is required upon hire

  • Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete a background check

  • Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
