Why does the job exist?

 
The position of a Supervising Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) exists to provide critical leadership and clinical oversight within healthcare settings. This role bridges the gap between registered nurses and nursing assistants by delivering hands-on nursing care while also supervising and supporting the nursing team. Supervising LPNs/LVNs ensure that patient care is delivered safely, effectively, and in accordance with established policies, protocols, and regulatory requirements.
They are responsible for coordinating daily nursing activities, delegating tasks, and providing guidance and mentorship to Licensed Nursing Assistants and Associate CNAs. This supervision helps maintain high standards of care, promotes staff development, and enhances team communication. Additionally, Supervising LPNs/LVNs play a key role in monitoring patients¿ conditions, administering medications and treatments as prescribed, and collaborating with healthcare providers to implement individualized care plans.

How does it get done?

 
Provide direct nursing care to patients/residents, including administering medications, treatments, and injections as prescribed
Supervise, train, and mentor Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Associate CNAs, and other support staff
Delegate tasks appropriately while ensuring quality and safety standards are maintained
Monitor and assess patient/resident conditions, recognizing changes and reporting promptly to Registered Nurses (RNs) or physicians
Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team
Ensure compliance with facility policies, state nursing regulations, and infection control standards
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of nursing care, medication administration, and patient observations
Coordinate daily nursing operations, including staff assignments and shift coverage
Facilitate effective communication within the nursing team and with other healthcare professionals
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff performance evaluations
Respond to patient/resident emergencies and provide appropriate interventions within scope of practice
Promote a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for patients/residents and staff

The primary customer are the brave men and women that answered our nations call, executed their duties and now are unable to live in their respective communities due to failing health.  This job will also support the widows of the service men and women to include parents that have lost children in combat (Gold Star Parents)

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate for the Supervisor, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) position is a compassionate, experienced, and mission-driven nursing professional dedicated to serving those who have served our country. The candidate must hold an active, unrestricted LPN or LVN license issued by the New Mexico Board of Nursing or compact state participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact. They must also possess current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. A minimum of 1 to 5 years of clinical nursing experience is required, preferably within a long-term care or skilled nursing facility environment.
This role requires a nurse leader with a strong clinical foundation, who can effectively manage and support nursing staff while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, resident-centered care. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in working with veterans, their families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams. A thorough understanding of relevant federal and state regulations, including OSHA, HIPAA, and CMS standards, is essential, along with proficiency in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems. Familiarity with veteran-specific care needs and a commitment to the values of respect, dignity, and service are highly valued. Minimum Qualification

 
Licensure as LPN or LVN, and two (2) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

 
This position is designated safety sensitive.  Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules, and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.

Must possess and maintain a valid American Heart Association BLS / CPR Certification

Employment is subject to criminal background check pursuant to New Mexico Caregivers Criminal Screening Act, (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license. 

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Must possess and maintain a valid Safe Food Handling Certificate or receive within 1 week of date of hire.

Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training.

Must sign and observe confidentiality agreement.

Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.

Occasional travel for training & meetings and driving a State of NM owned motor vehicle may be required; Working hours may include weekends, holidays, overtime, and callback hours. Essential functions of the job and specific physical ability requirements will be available at the time of interview or may be obtained at the New Mexico Veterans' Home Human Resources office.

Working Conditions

 
Work is performed within a long-term facility with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and personal computer and phone usage. Walking throughout the facility and frequent communication and interaction with residents, staff, and the public.  Periods of walking, standing, bending pushing, pulling, lifting, and stretching for a variety of activities may be required.  Must be able to function under pressure and stressful situations Health hazards such as exposure to contagious viruses and diseases.  May also include routine exposure to public, fellow employees, and facility resident illness, stressful situation, and bodily fluids, as well as exposure to physical and/or verbal abuse. Occasional travel for training & meetings and driving a State of NM owned motor vehicle may be required; some lifting; extended hours to meet deadlines will be required. Working hours may include on-call, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and callback hours.  Essential functions of the job and physical ability requirements will be available at the time of interview or may be obtained at the New Mexico Veterans' Home Human Resources Office
