The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six different divisions including hospital level inpatient psychiatric care for both civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for people with behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. As the largest behavioral health complex in the state, inpatient/residential care is provided to over 250 New Mexicans every day, along with 400 outpatient clients a month. There are over 600 employees across all the divisions of NMBHI to ensure high-quality treatment and care is delivered.

Why does the job exist?

 
Laundry service workers clean garments, linens, draperies, blankets, and other articles. They also may clean leather, suede, fur, and rugs. Laundry service workers ensure proper cleaning by adjusting machine settings for a given fabric or article, as determined by the cleaning instructions on each item of clothing. When necessary, workers treat spots and stains on articles before laundering or dry-cleaning. They tend to machines during cleaning and ensure that items are not lost or misplaced with those of another customer. These workers often work in dry-cleaning establishments and are responsible for starching, steaming, and ironing clothing and other items to remove wrinkles. When finished, they assemble each customer's items, bag, or box the articles, and prepare an itemized bill for the customer.

How does it get done?

 
-Sorts, marks, washes, dries, irons, and folds laundry.
-Picks up and delivers laundry, operates laundry equipment, and under supervision will assist in the performance of preventative maintenance procedures and minor repair of equipment.
-May assist in a clothing or linen supply room.
-Performs special washing spot cleaning bleaching drying ironing and finish work.

Who are the customers?

 
This position provides linen services to all patients who are admitted to the hospital division of NMBHI.

Ideal Candidate

 
Ideal candidate would have:
-Prior experience in laundry, linen or housekeeping services, 
-Ability to follow proper handling procedures for solid linens, chemicals and equipment in accordance with safety and infection control standards,
-Strong attendance, punctuality and ability to follow assigned schedules and work assignments,
-Ability to maintain a respectful and professional work environment with coworkers.

Minimum Qualification

 
Eighth grade education.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess a current driver's licenses and defensive driving certificate.

Working Conditions

 
This position will work in a laundry or linen service department with exposure to heat, moisture, chemicals, noise and soiled linens. The position requires standing for extended periods, frequent lifting, pushing cards, and repetitive motions. Employees must follow infection control, safety, and sanitation procedures. Employee will be required to work weekends, holidays, and varied shifts based on operational needs.
