This position is assigned to the Health Information Management Division (HIMD) of the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute (NMBHI) it is comprised of various inpatient services including psychiatric services, treatment services for adolescents, long term care services, and forensic treatment services, as well as a comprehensive outpatient services program. Several services are provided within the HIMD to include Assembly & Analysis, Coding, Release of Information, Geographical Census, Unit Clerks, as well as Health Record Storage Retrieval & Retention. Additionally the Department is responsible for several services associated with financial mgmt. including coding of procedures/treatments for billing purposes and various auditing procedures associated with the verification of record requirements for billing and compliance with other applicable standards, rules, and regulations. Responsible for the department's compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act HIPAA regulations.

Incumbent will be assigned to the Health Information Management Division (HIMD) within The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute at Las Vegas. The incumbent will be responsible for printing, editing, logging, and dissemination of transcribed health record documents. Maintain compliance with standard rules, regulations, and requirements of the Joint Commission Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, National Committee for Quality Assurance and the New Mexico Administrative Code and procuring storeroom requisitions for office supplies and form acquisition.

How does it get done?

 
Individual occupying this position is responsible for preserving the established system in which active health records are maintained. They must maintain an efficient process for the logging and filing of health record documents and maintain consistency by retrieving documents in the filing bins on their assigned units on a daily basis. Receipt of health record documents must be acknowledged by signing the appropriate transcription log. Health record documents must be filed according to most current active health record chart order in the active health record the same day they are received. Health records must be audited for missing documents, signatures, dates and times. Records must be purged according to the most current purge schedule. This individual will retrieve discharged health records from the units on a daily basis. Perform other related duties as assigned, cross train, backup other department functions as assigned by supervisor as deemed necessary.

Ideal Candidate

 
Experience in auditing confidential health records charts, monitor and report the status of complete and accurate and timely health record completion. Maintain and ensure precision while effectively focusing on details. Experience working with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Minimum Qualification

 
High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) months experience working in a hospital setting using medical terminology, processing and maintaining a medical records system, and/or use of Microsoft Office programs and hospital clinical software. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) months may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess a current driver's license and defensive driving certificate.  Mandatory annual trainings.

Working Conditions

 
Work is mostly performed in areas dedicated to patient care and in an office environment.
Exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive use of computers, and other office equipment.
The position necessitates extensive walking to and from various units in unpredictable weather conditions.
