Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated, detailed oriented individual to under general direction of the Regional Field Supervisor, independently or as a member of a professional team, travel to conduct surveys, investigations and monitoring visits of long-term care facilities and hospitals to determine compliance with State Licensure requirements and/or Federal Medicare/Medicaid certification regulations. Coordinates nutrition programs, consults, and performs dietary surveys. Serves as preceptor for lower-level surveyors and as the subject matter expert on issues of dietetics.

Essential Functions

  • Travels as part of the survey team to conduct difficult and complex on-site nutrition surveys of hospitals and nursing homes to assure compliance with the Nursing Home Care Act, Title XIX and XVIII of the Social Security Act and Hospital Licensing Act.
  • Plans, coordinates and administers new surveyor training and existing surveyor standardization programs.
  • Reviews and evaluates survey and investigation reports to lower level dieticians for technical accuracy and compliance with applicable directives, policies and guidelines.
  • Provide technical consultation to facility owners and operators of long-term care facilities and hospitals.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires successful completion of both state and federal Basic Surveyor Orientation courses.
  • Requires three (3) years of experience as a health facilities surveyor.
  • Requires possession of a valid Illinois certificate as a registered Dietitian and knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, supplemented by a Master's degree in nutrition, dietetics, or food service management and one (1) year of professional experience in nutrition, dietetics, or food service management; preferably requires registration by the American Dietetic Association. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years experience as part of a survey team conducting difficult and complex on-site nutrition surveys of hospitals and nursing homes to assure compliance.
  • Three (3) years experience collaborating with team members to prepare reports and document evidence.
  • Two (2) years experience serving as a preceptor to staff in regards to training and orientation.
  • One (1) year experience preparing complex written & oral reports.
  • One (1) year work experience in Microsoft Word, processing, and spreadsheet applications (i.e., Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
